Let me just say how awesome I find this series to be.
I am sooo looking forward to portable Gradius Gaiden on the PSP.
I still need to find a copy of nemesis for the Game Boy though.

Ah, Gradius. 'You know what distinguishes a great Gradius player? In my humble opinion, it's resiliency--the ability to lose the stockpile and keep on going. The stockpile can be both your friend and your enemy, but to the expert player, it's not even there.
Favorite Gradius?

Gradius 3 is cool. Regrettably, I haven't played 4 or 5 yet, nor have I played the MSX versions...
But Salamander 2 is awesome.

Gradius V is hands down my favorite.
Gradius Gaiden also holds a dear place in my heart.

There ain't a damn game I dislike in Gradius... or Salamander... or Parodius. I just played a bit of G5 recently. Man, they really went all out with awesomeness. Those Direction Options are all kinds of awesome.
Am I the only one who pisses his pants on stage 6? (Not literally, I ain't incontinent).

After level 5 I regularly just start cursing because too many things are trying to take me out. Sooo coool though...I mean...it is literally one of the most challenging sidescrolling shmups I've ever played.
On par with Ikaruga...though I have gotten soo used to playing Ikaruga on both the GCN and Dreamcast that I regularly beat them in less than an hour.
