I know it is just a single line in your article, but is it possible you are getting Divine Divinity mixed up with Sacred? The first Divinity game is actually a lot closer to, I dunno, a single character Baldur's Gate of Ultima 7 (though it does have the clickfest combat of the Diablo games). The second game, though, is indeed more like Diablo.

As it was only $2.50 on Impulse last week and I found some favorable reviews, I almost bought it - but then it is only $5 regular price. (Even cheaper than GOG.com!)

I would argue that when you take out the tactical combat and party interaction out of Baldur's Gate, you'd already have eliminated the two most important factors that distinguish it from a "Diablo clone" with a little more story.

Really great and deep article, even if it doesn't encourage me to play the games - I tried the first Arkania a few months ago and I was discouraged after just a few minutes. I might skip to Star Trail and give it a try through.
However, I'm pleased to see a picture of Albion at the beginning of the article. I'm currently playing it (albeit very slowly) and I'm liking it a lot. It's simpler than many other RPGs of the era, but still mantains the right layer of complexity.

OK by me, but ask Discoalucard to make sure.
I was living in Korea until two weeks ago. Currently, I'm back in Germany.

First game is so. damn. rough. Very difficult to enjoy now a days. Star Trail seems much more friendly from what I've played, but that's in large because of the smooth scrolling engine vs the primitive M&M IV+V-style engine of Blade of Destiny.

People are just too damn spoiled (i completed them all twice).
By the way, a small hint - the first time you defeat a enemy type you get a very large xp bonus per enemy of that type... so get into the largest fight you can with that new enemy and you're halfway to a new level.
Never knew the game was declined on the cd version... so camping in the dungeons was not intended huh.

Apparently the new version on Steam is a remake of the first game.

I've been following this for a while, and have it preordered on Steam for the 20% discount. It doesn't look too bad for a low budget remake, although the combat in the trailers seems really slow. (But maybe there could be options to speed it up? Hopefully?)
The company that's publishing it has some questionable business practices, though... after the original trilogy had only ever been sold as a bundle for years, they released the first game standalone in between delays of the remake, presumably to try and fool people into buying it, thinking it would be the remake.

Matt Chat has had a very cool series of interviews with Guido Henkel, one of the creators of this series: mattchat.us/I didn't know he had another Kickstarter campaign for a new RPG. Too bad they didn't make the goal, the concept looks interesting, much in the vein of Realms of Arkania. They're now off to "Plan B", developing the game in episodic chunks while taking pledges via a custom system on their homepage. deathfiregame.com/Oh, and the Blade of Destiny remake turned out to be a major trainwreck. What's holding me back from covering it is mostly the shitty performance. It takes like five minute to load the first town, and I get a terrible framerate even with the lowest settings. :\

Seems that the Blade of Destiny remake has been successful enough to warrant an update called "For The Gods". Who knows if they have also patched it to improve its performance. Seeing how Might & Magic X is apparently nothing special, these late revivals of classic rpgs are turning out underwhelming.

As long as they'll refuse to include all the gameplay evolutions of the past 30 or so years, it's never going to be anything special.
