So, for as long as I've been a gamer, I can always remember there being huge rifts between RTS gamers over which system or company made the best RTS games.
Personally, I enjoy Total Annihilation, Starcraft, and Empire at War.

I've never been too big of an RTS player, but the two true champions of the genre would have to be Blizzard and Westwood (before they were absorbed by EA). The original Command & Conquer is among the few RTS's that I can actually stand.

i played a lot of RTS games for a while, but Blizzard's always stood out as my favorite. Command and Conquer always felt too loose to me, for some reason.
Starcraft was hands down my favorite RTS game. in my freshman year of college, seven other friends (some at my school, some at others) and i played this game five days a week for an entire semester. great times.

I am BAD at these games. The only ones I really do good at are Herzog Zwei and Military Madness. But beyond that, *pffft*.

You can get it from here (it's English otherwise, but the story parts are in Japanese only): www.stack.nl/~mth/msx/games/herzog/
And here's a MSX emulator I recommend using: www.bluemsx.com/

Ergo, you can tell that I'm a real greenhorn with these games. You could probably obliterate me in under three minutes just by sending a few of your weakest units to my base. >_<

Hmm, Blizzard is definately the most household name of RTS (not saying that's a bad thing) but you can't leave out a lot of other interesting little games that sort of fell of the scope.
I think Dungeon Keeper 1&2 count as RTSs (not just dungeon sims) and they're superb nothing else really like them.
Sacrifice is also excellent, Shiny at their best.
I also personally really enjoyed Spellforce (and desperatly want Spellforce 2) which is a RTS/RPG hybrid and Rise of Nations which has a sequal due out eventually which should be awesome.
