Jewel Master (stage 1) and Midnight Resistance (stage 1) are real nice tunes, but not such nice games www.youtube.com/watch?v=UorJ6nCfMXkwww.youtube.com/watch?v=MU7sv_oeWTAOh also the first level track of Jim Power. Might be my single favorite Huelsbeck track www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ETj29ewvIcLiked the SNES version best. (That said I'm not sure Jim Power is actually a terrible game. I played the first level a ridiculous amount, intrigued by the difficulty and strange scrolling effects. It has weird monsters and color scheme too, so it seems more like an imcomplete/rushed project really) --- A couple of others: E-SWAT for the Master System: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRjk3yIWi2E&feature=related Not sure it's a terrible game, but I like the music more than anything else. Also Last Battle had its moments: ... but can't find a Youtube. Some fairly nice stuff that sounded better when I translated it into MIDI output with soundfonts one time. I never liked the Valis series much aside from the music. The second one in particular is good, third one too. Final Zone by Motoi Sakuraba, i love that whole soundtrack, yet the game kind of stinks (I guess it's not TERRIBLE in that it's playable but it's so choppy and repetitive without being addicting... Granada was so much more fun, yet the soundtrack in that one, despite being by the same guy on the same systems and during the same time period, sounds much worse :/ The opening of Zero Wing...

Ah, good call. Man, Unlimited SaGa was such a terrible game, but what an amazing soundtrack! -Tom I concur. It was designed to be one of the most beautiful games ever, but it's too bad that could not save it from poor gameplay.

I should mention Metal Morph, Origin's SNES platformer/space shooter game. Game's not that great, but the music (composed by famous C64 musician Martin Galway) is actually pretty cool.

I'd say Mega Man X7 is a victim of this. Bad game, awesome music:

This is a game that had a lot of potential. It had great graphics, big bosses, Nordish mythology, but unfortunately, Jaleco went under and the game was released unfinished. The result was that Ougon no Kizuna SUCKED big time. Lots of loading times, towns are menu based, dialogue is presented by stiff characters, graphics are unpolished and bosses battles had no imagination.
But at least the music was pretty cool! Probably because it was done while the game still had a budget.
The music's volume is a bit low though, sorry for that.

I always liked the soundtrack to the SNES action RPG Lagoon. The game however is one of the most poorly constructed games in the genre I have ever encountered. Extremely linear, AWFUL combat with toothpick sized sword and incredibly dull environments. The dungeons were ridculously large and don't even get me started on the "escort" missions. Not that the people you had to escort could take damage, but they moved so sloooow I can't even begin to describe the frustration.
Anyway, the music rocked;
EPIC!

I didn't find Lagoon to be as bad as people say it is. I mean, if you liked Ys back then, then you couldn't have hated Lagoon.
But the music is indeed the highlight of the game. I've loved the soundtrack the second the Kemco logo appeared on the screen.

Back when Lagoon was released on the SNES I hadn't played Ys yet, but as it turned out some years later - Ys wasn't my cup of tea either. Though I can totally see why fans of Ys would be able to enjoy Lagoon. My only reference at the time was A Link to the Past, Landstalker, Soul Blazer, and some older NES games, like Willow (which is actually pretty similar to Lagoon with its large, labyrinthine dungeons and overall layout, but with much better sword action) Lagoon was better than Young Merlin (what a turd..) and about on pair with Soul Blazer but still light years behind the likes of Zelda and Landstalker (an acquired taste, I'm sure). Shortly thereafter Secret of Mana appeared though, and blew everything out of the water, in my humble opinion. But I still listen to the Lagoon soundtrack sometimes, more so than any of the other games mentioned EDIT: I may have the release dates of these games confused a bit, but it was pretty much the order I played them anyway.

The X68000 version of Lagoon sounds better:

I'll stay with the SNES version. The SNES sound chip is aces and this version sounds a bit like the Genesis sound chip in some places.

You make that sound like a bad thing.
Still, I'd rather have the Thunder Blade soundtrack, which that is ridiculously reminiscent of.

Aside from a few gems, yes, the Genesis sound chip was nothing to write home about. I understand someone having nostalgia about it, but some sound chips sound good no matter the era (Amiga, SNES, NES) and some not so much (Genesis, N64, SMS). Of course, it's also debatable if 'nostalgia' is the same thing making us love the SNES sound chip so much after all this time
