I understand someone having nostalgia about it, but some sound chips sound good no matter the era (Amiga, SNES, NES) and some not so much (Genesis, N64, SMS). I know you were trying to be diplomatic by putting a Nintendo system between two Sega systems, but the N64 did not have an internal sound chip. Any audio was being emulated directly off the software, which more accounts for the crap audio of most N64 games because valuable memory usage on the cart had to be used up for audio.

Actually, I didn't put the systems in any order. I just typed them as they came to my head. And yes, the N64 did not have a sound chip. I spaced out with that one. But my point was more about how each console inputs their trademark 'sound'. Which in this case it doesn't matter if it had a sound chip or not.
While there are lots of N64 games with GREAT soundtracks (anything by Nintendo/RARE, Shadowgate, Ogre Battle, Legacy of Darkness, Rogue Squadron, etc.), you can't deny that the sound input wasn't up to the quality of its predecessor.

Did anyone say Castlevania Curse of Darkness yet? That is one awfully boring game with an incredible soundtrack. It's actually - dare I say it - the best Michiru Yamane ever composed. Yes, better than SotN. In my opinion, of course. Shame about the game though. It's a 13 hour game that somehow manages to feel like 130 hours. Slow, flat, repetitive, HUGE samey levels that seem to go on forever, but not in a good way.

I downloaded Gaia Seed from the PSN store today. The game is not the greatest but the soundtrack is so awesome. It is super weird, but very atmospheric. I seriously played the game for like three hours straight because the music kept me in a trance. It is 5.99 on PSN under the new Japanese Import section. I need to find this soundtrack now. :-p

The first song sounds a bit like the Darius Gaiden soundtrack in some parts.
If you haven't heard that one, then watcha waiting for?

I think the Hokuto no Ken games that Toei released on the Famicom and Super Famicom had pretty good soundtracks, even though half of them were rather rubbish (only 4 and 5 were remotely decent in my opinion, even though their stories were basically licensed fan-fictions). Apparently Shouei managed to get ahold of J-Walk Mitsuyasu, an actual guitarist, to compose the music for their games, even though most of their output was pretty mediocre.

Admit it.

Yeah, but that game's soundtrack was completely ripped from Activision's The Music Studio. (Heh, thanks to the IRC guys for showing me that)

I know. I was actually the one who pointed that out.
But yeah, Action 52 songs were "stolen" from a Atari ST program, but Im not sure if Cheetahmen was from that too.

Oh right, Yoshi Story, how could I forget that one. Bad game, great soundtrack. Good quality too, doesn't sound like N64 at all.

Not a BAD game at all, but nowhere near as good as the music.
Breathtaking vocal work.

Super Valis IV for the SNES had some pretty great songs. It's too bad the game's gameplay could have been a lot better.
This is probably my favorite song from the game.

3 pages in and still nobody has thought to mention Sonic 06. For shame. (Still) the best soundtrack to a Sonic game since SA1, attached to the worst Sonic game since Spinball on the Game Gear (which, for the record, is still worse). What a collossal fucking waste. Consider the following: Wave Ocean ~ The Water's Edge/ The InletCrisis City OST version (combines all four themes from the stage into a 7-minute epic) Radical Train ~ The ChaseTropical Jungle ~ The RuinsKingdom Valley OST version (again, 7 minutes - and the orchestra voice throughout is none other than Takenobu Mitsuyoshi) Vs. Player Character bosses (don't have the volume all the way up...) Egg Cerberus/GenesisEgg Wyvern (Sonic's last boss, wishes it was the Egg Viper but fails miserably at apeing it. best if not listened to right after the above track) End of the World OST version (seven themes one after the other, each one building on the last; trippy) And the Castle Town and Forest themes for a relaxing finisher. Sonic Shuffle also happens to be a fairly bleh game with some nice tunes, but they're scattered all over the game and I can't recall the very random names each song wound up with.

Super R-Type had a fabulous and jazzy soundtrack. I fucking hate shooters this hard (this one even more so for its lack of any continue points), but the music still rings a highly nostalgic note with me.
Also the Turbo Grafx Batman. It's obviously not as good as something as Arkham Asylum, but I would kill to have this game on my cell phone. What bit of music there is fucking rocks.
