Holidays. A horror movie anthology with individual 10-minute-ish segments for Valentine's, St. Patrick's, Easter, Mother's and Father's Day, Halloween, Christmas and New Year's. Each one by a different director, too. So there is a nice diversity of styles and ideas in there. And with the very limited running time, each one basically goes for one idea without the need to stretch things out, overcomplicate things, or even having to come up with needless explanations for the strange happenings. Some of course are better than others, usually the more out there ideas. For example I really liked the Easter one, where a overly inqusitive little kid conflicts the Easter Bunny and the Jesus Easter myth and her mother has a really hard time getting her lies about the Holiday straight and lo and behold, at night they do get visited by a monster that's half Stigmata-ridden-thorn-crowned human but also has a hairless deformed bunny face and it's just so amazingly out there. In contrast the Halloween one is just a boring quicky of a mean guy getting his comeuppance, something that's written like it should be torture porn, but can't even show that because the movie is super tame.

Stargate. Never saw that one before and I must say that it hasn't aged too well. Plus, with all the conspiracy theorists nowadays, it just reminds me of the current climate instead of being an escapist fantasy. I can't believe that this only movie could generate so many spin-offs and such (which I never saw either, by the way).

King of the Monsters looks promising! I'm just tired of all the political scenes and people talking. Even though my friend really liked the recent Godzilla anime, I just couldn't get into it. The Hideaki Anno Shin Godzilla was okay. Again, too much talking and build, less actual kaijuu action.

Bohemian Rhapsody. As a Queen fan I enjoyed it a lot despite all the inaccuracies and dramatized stuff, then again it wasn't supposed to be a biopic, rather a fictionalized account of the band's rise up until the legendary Live Aid concert. Rami Malek is excellent as Mercury but I don't get why they gave him prostethic teeth, but not contact lenses with Freddie's actual eye color. Was it so difficult?

Jimmy's Hall
Good movie with a powerful message. Based on existing historical events in the early 20th century, Ireland, it's about a group of people with socialsit ideals who build a community center. There they meet to dicuss, teach and perform all kinds of art and philosophy like music, dance or poetry. But they have to face harsh opposition by the church and landowners who forcibly oppress them and the socialist movement. The sad thing is that not much seems to have changed since then, at least for most parts of Europe.
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts
Wow! This Indonesian production tells a vaguely Western-genre inspired story about a woman fighting a gang of robbers and rapers. But rather than being your typical revenge-driven exploitation flick, it's more a story about survival and gender-roles within society. And even though it can be quite violent, for the most part it's surprisingly calm, meditative and thoughtful. Cinematography and editing are spectacular: every single shot is beautifully composed and the slower paced editing gives each of those time to breathe. I cannot recommend it enough!

I watched Smallfoot.
It was pretty bad. But not *super* bad. Like, basically the movie itself was decent but the songs they insisted on shoehorning in were atrocious.

Commando Ninja - I'm big into cheesy movies that do not take themselves seriously. Commando Ninja is like Kung Fury, but with shooting. Lots of shooting. And ninjas! Primarly it's a spoof of Commando and American Ninja (hence the title), with references to Terminator, Predator, Rambo, Mad Max, and 80s action in general thrown in for good measure.

Scrooged Up until 10-15 years ago in Italy this film was shown relatively frequently around Christmastime (under the title "S.O.S. Fantasmi", or "S.O.S. - Ghosts") then they just somewhat forgot about it. Despite being 30 years old I have never seen it in full until these days. I liked it, it helps that I'm a fan of Bill Murray and those 80s supernatural horror-comedies with old school SFX. As a Christmas film it isn't bad and I'm kinda disappointed that it has been mostly forgotten (though I also think that "Gremlins" is a typical Xmas film, so...) and Karen Allen is adorable in it.

Man I love Scrooged. It did well in America, and I think it's still pretty well regarded here. It's definitely part of our holiday movie tradition, along with Christmas Vacation.
We just watched Bird Box, the new Netflix original horror movie. Stars Sandra Bullock and has a good performance by John Malkovich and some other lesser known people. Really enjoyable movie. Does make me think that someone saw The Happening and said "I bet I can do this better."

I haven't watched TV in years, but back when it was the same here in Germany. You could bank on some channel showing The Last Unicorn and Tři oříšky pro Popelku for the kids sometime in the morning, and stuff like Scrooged and Home Alone towards the prime time.

Ahh Scrooged - haven't watched that one in ages. Big-budget Fantasy-Satires as sharp and witty like this were not that common back then - but they did exist. Nowadays those kind of movies are basically extinct. (Yeah, I'm old and grumpy.)

Last day of the year was also bad movie night so I and some friends watched an Italo-Spanish coproduction, the awesomely terrible superhero film Supersonic Man (1979), a Superman rip-off starring some guy with a porn 'stache as the hero's human identity and Knockoff William Shatner as the mad scientist bad guy. Everything in it is either amateurish, laughable or dumb, and the "serious" parts are much funnier than the several attempts at comedy. However it has also a disco main theme that it's as cheesy as it is catchy, you can listen to it here. " Supersonic Man, I wanna be..." The whole film is on Youtube as well if you want experience it for yourself.
Today I watched House a.k.a. HAUSU, the Japanese psychedelic horror cult classic; finally followed GamerL 's suggestion and I'm glad that I did, because I absolutely loved it! It's probably the goofiest, happiest and most colorful horror-comedy film I've ever seen, and knowing that the director's then-preteen daughter helped him in devising some scenes and effects definitely explains a lot. There's a bit of everything: slice of life, comedy, surreal horror, martial arts, a small dose of personal drama and a bit of nudity, plus an inappropriate (but amazing) 1970s funk-pop score and lots of inventive SFX that really make it look like a dream crossed with a commercial (the director came from ads and experimental stuff). If you have the slightest interest in surreal, dreamy stuff you need to watch this. The girls are all super lovely and adorable without being annoying, too bad that most of them didn't have a career before or after this film (which adds to its strange quality), and it was more than 40 years ago, so... Watch it, and beware the cat!

The main girl did have a career, at least. I forget her name, but I saw her in some 80s jidaigeki shows. I don't think his daughter helped him devise any actual effects - from what I've heard and read, she gave him ideas for things she considered scary, and he worked from that. The crazy effects came from his time making experimental shorts and his inventive temperament. Obayashi's other movies aren't as crazy, but most of them do feature a lot of wild and stylish formal experimentation, just not all the time like Hausu. For example, School in the Crosshairs is relatively normal for about 60% of its running time, but it's got little touches throughout, and the big final scene is crazy and amazing.

Cool, glad you finally watched it. The nudity is especially unexpected given the tone of the movie is almost like a kid's movie, but it just adds to the surreal nature of the film.
