www.hardcoregaming101.net/ketsui/ketsui.htmI've strayed away from covering Cave games here, partially because so many of them are (or were, in this case) arcade-only, and partially because I hate dealing with their fans. But screw it - I really like this game! The port doesn't have as many features as Cave's other 360 games and it gets really hard pretty early on, but the scoring system is actually a lot of fun. I'm not great at it - last I checked I was ranked something like 650 out of 1000 - which could be worse.

Is Cave infamous for having obnoxious fans? I hadn't realized.
I've always been impressed by Cave's scoring systems- they seem to come up with some remarkably elegant ones. Progear's sticks in my head offhand, too.

Is Cave infamous for having obnoxious fans? I hadn't realized. Yeah, it seems like the majority of Cave fans (that I've seen) refuse to acknowledge that there are any other shooters out there, refuse to acknowledge that Cave games occasionally release with glitches, and generally seem to just live in denial about similar sorts of things.

There's a lot of hostility towards folks that don't subscribe to Cave's hyper competitive atmosphere, especially other subgenres of shooters. Just visit the SHMUPS forums for a taste of it. I usually tend to get into arguments with them because Cave's console ports aren't nearly as full featured as they should be. That's even the case with Ketsui. I got it the same after After Burner Climax came out, which, despite featuring similar basic ideas - a short game meant to be played over and over to increase scores - has tons of unlockable stuff in form of the EX Options, which gives rewards for accomplishing various goals. And After Burner costs roughly 1/8th the price it cost to buy Ketsui.
Most Cave console ports don't really have this or any reason to reach for high scores beyond one's competitive nature, which tends to exclude them from most people's radars, because they require an overwhelming of practice to really get good at. This breeds resentment from Cave fans towards those who do not know the true glory of spending dozens of hours for full mastery of a game to impress absolutely no one except a bunch of other self-important nerds online.
I guess that sounds really bitter, but HG101 reviews aren't meant to be consumer-level reviews nor are they necessarily critiques behind specific design philosophies, so the review is mostly free of those complaints. Besides, one shouldn't let awful fans deter them from stuff. There's still a lot of fun to be had if you sit down with them, even if you don't necessarily sit down to try and master it.

That came as a surprise. I thought I'd never see a Cave article on here, but it's good to finally do. I actually AM a Cave fan (been one for around 5 years now), but still I also enjoy lots of other shooters (Gradius, R-Type, Xexes, Toaplan stuff, the occasional Psykio game, etc.) and I know quite a lot of other fans that do. So maybe either I was lucky in meeting the right Cave fans or you unfortunately just ended up meeting the wrong ones. I don't know. ^^

I know some decent ones. As usual, it's just a handful of really of obnoxious ones that are off putting.

So Ketsui is region free like Espgaluda II and Mushihimesama Futari?
-edit -
My mistake. I see where you mentioned it towards the end of the 360 section. Guess this is for the best. Without a Novice mode, it wouldn't be much fun.

Yeah might add a few of those. No idea how to unlock some of the extra options. Just some unlocked over the course of play. Haven't figured out the No Bullet mode. Sure as hell haven't unlocked "Continue at Doom" because there's no way in hell I'd ever reach him to begin with.

Ah, so the features unlock (too bad in my opinion). Good to know.

I'm a really laid-back shmup fan, so Cave's games are usually above me. I like shmups, I'm just not THAT good at them.
I wish more would get ported to the PS3, as well, but I suppose the 360's architectural similarity to a PC makes it easier to port to.

You know what's hilarious about this? Cave fans at the shmup board accuse Touhou fans of the same thing.

I wish this game would get ported to the PS3. ;_; I love this game, but I don't want to buy an xbox just for it. I can play it at my local arcade, but I can only get there on the weekends and that is not enough time to get much better.

Honestly I wish all the neat shooters that keep getting released on the 360 would get brought to the PS3. I'm not going to buy a 360 for them, but I'd buy a lot of them in a heartbeat if they were on the system I own.

It's just as funny to me because I also think the same way about Touhou fans (though they seem to rise to a whole new level of wackiness in my book because it's a combination of ridiculous shoot-em-up and the fact that they all go nuts over the character designs).
