This looks really impressive for a 1991 X68000 title. Although the graphics seem wildly inconsistent between stages.
The article mentions a decent story but doesn't cover any of it, perhaps a line or two on what that actually entails?

Actually, the "decent story" I mention in the early paragraphs is the Assault Suits Valken story, which I thought was pretty rad (war for resources, dude killing himself, etc). For Aquales I just say that colourful cinemas explain the backstory, which is English. There's a video of it here: gyusyabu.ddo.jp/MP3/1991/AQ1.html

Please can we have some more X68000 articles? I find the system has a fascinating collection of games, and it's the last place left one might find good emulatable games after having exhausted the usual 8 and 16-bit systems.
Great article, convinced me to aquire the game immediately.
Edit: How does one grapple? There's some "XF" controls that needed remapping before I could jump, but I still can't work out how to grapple.

Yeah, not only X68000, home computer exclusive stuff in general is rather underrepresented. Even for the Amiga there's a ton of games hardly anyone knows. Of the Japanese home computer games from Sketcz' blog post a while ago I found Briganty, Rusty, Edge and Galt-Rio particularly interestingly-looking (I think they were all PC-98).

It's definitely not the last place left - Japanese home computers are a very, very, deep rabbit hole

I sent a Kurt a big article (reprint from RG) on the Japanese computer scene, which is where my Japanese computer screenshot gallery on the blog came from.
It is indeed a VERY deep rabbit hole. Like, thousands, THOUSANDS of games which have never been covered in the west. Most are porn, admittedly, but still, quite a few gems to be discovered.

In mid-jump, push the jump button again and the grapple hook should shoot out. Thanks! I must have been half-asleep not to think of attempting a "double-jump". Being a Thunder Force fan I was delighted to discover Technosoft's X68000 edition. Superior graphics and audio to the Genesis, and two levels (if I recall) that didn't make it to the console versions. It's totally playable even without a knowledge of the language, but it's a shame that very few of these Japanese PC games have been translated... And as for the porn games comment, I've already discovered that these obscure Japanese computers are home to Elf's Words Worth. I'm honestly not *cough* into hentai *cough*, but WW was re-released as a Windows game with massively improved visuals, and is one of the very best first-person dungeon-crawlers I've ever played. Not quite up to Ultima Underworld, but it seems I'm desperate enough for more of the same to "stoop" to playing a hentai game? (There wasn't even much...) Anyway, I'm bloody jaded with games these days, but digging out some of these superb Japanese shooters with their classic-era pixel art and action reminds me why I enjoy games in the first place. Commercial games don't do "abstract" any more.

I think if you take a broad enough view most mediums are comprised mostly of porn.
Luckily there are more than enough good games to make it worht wading through.

I don't have too much a problem with games containing porn if the game itself is good - so I wouldn't say you're stooping to play them, Casimir's Blake. Night Slave had tonnes of really graphic lesbian bondage/S&M hentai, but the gameplay was a competent clone of Assault Suits Valken, with a neato Gradius-style weapons levelling system and a lot of diversity in its locations. So if you can emulate the PC98 (and it's tricky to get running smoothly), and are a fan of 2D mecha games, I would recommend it.
I love how the PC98 never has more than like 15 colours at any one time, but the quality of its sprite visuals are incredible in some games, like you could almost mistake them for a Genesis game despite the lower palette.

Thanks chaps. I've already heard about Night Slave and I've acquired it, just need to find time to play it. Not that I wish to derail this thread any further but I was half joking about the hentai (I'd rather watch something like Rumbling Hearts...), and it doesn't bother me much. I'm more frustrated that what look to be quality dungeon crawlers like the Dragon Knight series are somewhat impenetrable (joke in there somewhere, probably) due to the language barrier. Anyway I hope this is the start of a trend moving away from adventures now, Kurt?

The Dragon Knight series is pretty funny and well made. I should re-think my doing an article on it and just do it. And this Night Slave sounds relevant to my interests. Lightning Warrior Raidy is a fantasy lesbian eroge dungeon crawler that I find really enjoyable and also considered an article on.
My love of competent porn games aside, yeah, the X68K is a pretty neat system. That and the PC-88/PC-98 need more love. This game is a prime example why!

Night Slave is pretty much a variant of Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken with X-rated cutscenes... It's actually a surprisingly solid game beneath the porny exterior.
