www.hardcoregaming101.net/Fantranslation/Romhacking.htmThis is an updated version of a piece featured in Retro Gamer from back in 2006, I believe. I actually didn't know that Shining Force 3 had been translated. Includes a lot of stuff about non-English fan translations too.

I'd like to comment on one of the fan translations (SD Snatcher)
As someone who's played the original Japanese version, it should be noted that even in that version was Gillian given the codename of "Solid Snake" in the scene where he goes undercover in an attempt to get his job back, and dons a surgical mask, shades, and a hat (a la Michael Jackson).

What is it about that weird affection towards anything that hasnt been released outside of Japan?
I should plow trough Romhacking.net someday and get all SNES/NES translations. Just today I tried some fan-translated RPG's like Dragon Quest V and Shin Megami Tensei and they're both freaking awesome. Hopefully Dragon Quest will be as epic as I've heard it is.
I was always interested to know how the rom and translation community worked back in the BBS days. A rom pack I have has some interesting advertisement roms, which makes it all sound so...like they were cavemen compared to todays internet.
Its very dissappointing to open up a translated game and try it, only to find out there's only this "cavespeak", and something like menu is translated.
And the article is kicked off with a picture of Finnish translation? Bonus!

On the other hand, Larry Laffer was not in the actual Japanese game. That was added by the fan translators. I don't remember what the NPC originally said in the game, but I'm pretty sure it was something else. Its pretty obvious that the fan-translations of Metal Gear 2 and SD Snatcher were not done by natural English speakers. "Fox! I'll kick your twisted head off" just doesn't sound right, no matter how accurately translated the line may be. There's also a bug in Metal Gear 2 which causes Colonel Campbell's face to show when Snake talks to his "fan" prior to the battle with Night Sight. Its a shame nobody has released revised patches for either game yet. I'm guessing nobody is really that interested in SD Snatcher and anyone who wants to play Metal Gear 2 could just buy Subsistence instead.

Its very dissappointing to open up a translated game and try it, only to find out there's only this "cavespeak", and something like menu is translated. That's easy, don't download roms that are already translated. Always go to romhacking and get complete translations and patch the games yourself.

The only thing wrong with this article is including anything by DeJap. I always found them to be the most contemptible, disgusting, idiotic bunch of translators that had or ever will live in any sort of fan translation project or branch of media ever. The liberties and added frat boy humor was vile, unfunny, and completely ruined the experiences I had with all their games to the point where I either waited for another group, an official US release of some kind, or just gave up and played it in Japanese myself. They are the best example of what not to do when providing a product. I know not many had the choice of anything else, but it just felt so bad that this was the only version people had for a long time.
They're what would happen if Working Designs had an evil sibling. They ones that don't care and just turn in their project at Whatever O'Clock and were probably hungover when they did it. I'm really glad they dissolved. Fans deserve a lot better than that.
In before someone disagrees with me, but let me say now I have no interest in arguing about this. I find them loathsome, you're free to your opinion, but you can't change mine on this, so I'm dropping it now.
Otherwise, great article, seeing stuff like this and the Japanese gaming computer stuff is a welcome addition to the site. Would like to see more of this kind of stuff, personally.

You think they're bad? Try playing translations from other lesser groups. Your blood will boil.

Nice article! I remember hearing about the translations of FFV and Seiken Densetsu 3 when I was younger.
Nitpick: Tales of Phantasia was not 64 MB, it was 48 Mbits (=6 MB). Still huge for a SFC/SNES game, but nowhere near 64 MB.

Blast! No idea how that happened - I'll re-upload a corrected version later. Thank you. I also want to sneak in a link of: translationlibrary.blicky.net/They've got a lot of translations for visual novels and doujin titles not covered by RHDN. Not all the subsequent links are safe for work, for obvious reasons. EDIT: I've gotten some extra stuff from Derrick Sobodash, so will be adding that soonish.

Yeah that 1up article is good. But I found yours also very good and extremely interesting. You just might want to polish the flow of it a bit so that it reads smoother before it goes up officially. Good job.

Finally got around to reading this! A few quick things - At one point you mention "How many RG readers still have their ‘Warrior World’ newsletters from Enix...", obviously just a hangover from the original article. Re: Xian Jian series - Six sequels? I'm sure got them all, and I'm only seeing Xian Jian 1 - 4. I know there was a spinoff of 3 and a phone port of 1, but I've never come across anything about a Xian Jian 5 or 6. Useless bits of info - the "official" English name is "Chinese Paladin", frequently shortened to just "PAL". This is, IIRC, the name used on the .exe files and on the window when you're actually playing the games (I can check if needed). There's also a TV series of Xian Jian 3 now, starring Hu Ge again (different character this time). It's subbed on Youtube, and good fun Lastly - Xian Jian is not the only Chinese game to receive a foreign translation, Fantasia Sango (幻想三國志) 1 & 2 were translated into Japanese by Falcom for PC, and were also received an official translation into Korean too.

Thank you for the corrections - I am especially embarrassed at the RG reference left in. I'll get these corrected tonight, probably.

Nothing major really, and it's always a pleasure to see Chinese games getting some coverage (they certainly deserve better than they get!).
