倚天屠龍記 Yi Tian Tu Long Ji / Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber (Soft World) RPG based on the martial arts TV series by the same name. The isometric quarter view was very popular with chinese RPGs in the DOS era. The interface is similar to Dragon Quest games, but the battles are more akin to Final Fantasy Tactics, at least in the 2nd game. In the first game I couldn't get out of the big mansion, I had more luck with the "Gaiden" (too lazy to look up the pinyan counterpart) episode, which has a somewhat more defined graphics style. Here I made it to a huge overworld map where I could enter all kinds of towns (no random encounters) until I ran into a fight. It was only 1 on 1, but the other guy was much stronger. Rather overwhelming freedom of movement. Some music samples from the "Gaiden" game (I hope Chrome will at least STFU at hyperlinks, as long as my domain is banned. Please post if not): www.derboo.de/files/etinw-1.mp3www.derboo.de/files/etinw-2.mp3叢林戰爭 "Zen War" (known as Rock & Mick in Korea) SRPG similar to Shining Force. EDIT: I now found out the original title. Here's a link with better quality images: www.wretch.cc/blog/komoo/6172635

A double double feature this time to celebrate my domain's liberation from google's overachieving malware warning system. AD Cop (Electronic Music and Animated Graphics, 1996) A light gun shooter also playable with mouse, keyboard or joystick, but of course none of those options is that exciting. The game is oriented very close towards Virtua Cop, although the setting is a tad more futuristic. The graphics are inferior to Sega's game, with the enemies just being flat sprites. The game is very short, only 3 stages which are selectable from the beginning. Golden Train (Fullsoft, 1996) A confusing point & click adventure. The interface is simple enough with only one interaction button, but there's hardly any hints what to do, instead the game throws a crapload of items at you. In the beginning the main character finds a post officer ID which I guess is supposed to kick off his adventure, but other than his house there's only a few wilderness areas, a church and a locked door with a crucifix. The installation waiting screen is funny, the mascot fledgling chicken takes a world tour in its car. 孫悟空探險記 Sun Wukong Adventures (dunno if that is the correct chinese name, transcribed back from Korean) I think many know the Panda beat 'em up based on the Journey to the West novel, here's an adventure that uses the same source material. It think the game supports switching among characters (see the portraits on the interface) Dunk KongDonkey Kong exploitation was rather strong in Asia for a few years with many render-sprite games, but this one takes the cake. Even the title is hard to distinguish from the original in most Asian phonetic systems.

I guess we now know why Miyamoto really hated it.

I like how that Gorilla is not only hideous to look at, but also has a basketball for a hand. Now that's the kind of creativity you can only find in a bootleg.

Chain & Combo: Chaos Light (Acme Soft, 2000) One of the more obscure Taiwanese 1-on-1 fighters. 12 pre-rendered characters in a strange mix of fantasy & SF elements (mostly fantasy, though). Typically for fighters on the PC, the controls feel a bit stiff. I didn't manage to do much chains or combos, but the PC surely did. Some(all?) characters can also summon gods/demons as special moves, as you see in the screenshot below. I think this is one of the more visually attractive prerender games, especially since the animations are really smooth. Judging by the odd screen resolution, this is probably an arcade port. Also, a number of 1-screenshot shorties of which I know nothing else about: Amika (Amson, 1996) 熾天之翼 Chi Tian Zhi Yi Robot CommanderToon Town (Softstar) 美麗大作戰 Mei Li Dai Zuo Zhan (1997)

聖城劫 Sheng Cheng Jie (Ambo Computer Games, 1992) Call Wyrdwad... Looks like Ys? Plays like Ys! Well, not entirely. Like in the old Falcom favourite, you just bump into enemies to attack them, but it works a little different in detail. You have to attack cowardly from behind in order to not get hurt. It's a bit tricky, because enemy movement is random and fast. I didn't even make it through the first forest, which is swarmed by bats and goblins. This one I got actually in Chinese, so I didn't understand a single bit of the story. Neat little game, though, with nice 8-bit-esque graphics. Ultima Mission (Ying Yang Information, 1996) Another interestingly-looking TBS with mechas. This may have used a Chinese title in Taiwan, googling "Ultima Mission" and "Ying Yang" gives about nothing, and results for just "Ultima Mission" are full with Spider-Man crap.
