www.hardcoregaming101.net/hugo/hugo.htmPC gamers during the early 90s have probably at least heard of this shareware series. They're not particularly good, being low-level Sierra rip-offs, although it's a bit interesting how they made a random transition to a first person shooter.

I would say that much of the novelty of these games comes from the fact that back in the day, Sierra and Lucasarts games were all quite extremely expensive, and it was nice to have something that looked sort-of the same that could be spread around willy-nilly. I don't believe anyone else managed to accomplish anything of the sort, or at least managed to achieve anywhere near the same kind of fame. How many other ancient DOS shareware games do people still talk about, after all? (Aside from Apogee's, Epic's, and iD's, anyway?)
Can't say I've heard that term "hitscan" before.

Honestly I hadn't either, I had to check Wikipedia because I just assumed it was something I should've known. I'm familiar with the concept, just never heard the word for it.

Most FPS players are familiar with the term "hitscan" as it featured heavily in many early games in the genre, notably Wolf 3D. In fact, most FPS games with modern weaponry still use this sort of attack rather than model realistic ballistics. Good job on the article Bob, I was wondering when this would hit.

It's been so long since I saw those frustrating screens.

I'm vaguely aware of those European troll games, but I'm not sure how to differentiate them in the title?

Me too. GermanDanish Hugo is definitely more popular. He has lots of shitty games and even TV shows.

Oh no, not this series. ;D Could only beat the third game as a kid (thanks to a walkthrough). Never knew about the first-person shooter.
Nice article, btw.
