www.hardcoregaming101.net/higemaru/higemaru.htmThis was one of Capcom's first arcade games, a fairly simple single screen action game. It graduated to a full adventure title when it got quasi-ported to the Famicom, and it has some neat shades of Zelda. A fun little game, to be sure. It almost came to the US under the name Makai Island, although never quite made it.

A couple of grammar bits: This sentence is just nuts. How about: "You can also collect anchors, which will give you temporary invisibility, and items that will help raise your score. One of them is the famous yashichi symbol, which has appeared in a countless number of Capcom games since Vulgus." Similarly, "The gameplay in this game definitely improves on the gameplay in the previous game, by not only expanding on the original concept, but also adding little touches to it. There is a hit point counter, and possible ways of increasing it, which include rolling an object down a good number of enemies. This technique is especially useful against the Higemarus near the end of the game, who do a lot of damage to you. Collecting items can also increase your counter, including hidden ones such as the yashichi symbol (can't live without it, huh Capcom?)" Also, "who's other BGM works" should be "whose other BGM works". And mightn't it be a good idea to link to the Daimakimura article from the paragraph that starts talking about it? www.hardcoregaming101.net/gng/gng.htm

Unfortunately, bad news: My flash drive died on me, so until I get a new one, I'm unable to make those corrections, or make any new articles.
Speaking of new articles, I hope to do another article, maybe within the beginning of next year. Haven't decided what it will be, though.

"Capcom had plans to release this game in the U.S. under the name Makai Island, but due to Nintendo of America's policy at the time that only allowed five games per year to be released by a third party developer, it never happened. "

"Dokuro" means skull, not death.
Also, I don't think "Higemaru Makaijima" is the official title of the Famicom game. I know the name "Higemaru" appears on the logo, but every printed reference to the game refer to it as simply Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibōken.
Also, the European title of Capcom Generation Vol. 3 was Capcom Generations: First Generation.

I didn't see anything about Capcom or Makai Island in that link.
I know about Nintendo's policy, but it seems like it's hearsay to say that it was the reason why Capcom never brought Makai Island to the USA.

I happen to really like Pirate Ship Higemaru. I'd like to think it's one of the better maze-style arcade games I've played. I didn't know of a sequel, though - that was pretty fascinating to learn about.
