www.hardcoregaming101.net/darkseed/darkseed.htmOne of the first real horror games, Dark Seed can easily be seen as the predecessor to Silent Hill. Of course, the first game is a mess, design-wise. The second is much better, although it seems to be hated by fans of the first for actually being good.

Did you use a walkthrough? Because I sure has hell would've punched this game if I hadn't.

I once tried the first game, but I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do at all.

Truth is I contributed hints and advises while two of my friends sat at the keyboard, the oldest of which figured out the chronology of the stupid dead end events. He had a lot of experience with adventure games, so he did most of it. It's funny how at the time we didn't think it was a bad game at all. Just a really hard one. We were too busy looking at the awesome graphics. I'm sure Dark Seed is one of the reasons I hate adventure games.

Regarding the PC version of the first game being in 16 colors, I'm pretty sure it's not because of the game's amiga roots but because they were sticking to VGA, which was still the PC standard at the time, yet Giger had requested hi-res graphics (says wikipedia). So they had to use the 640x480 mode, but in VGA this comes with the limitation of only being able to use 16 colors. It's a tradeoff between detail and color depth, but with the increased resolution clever use of dithering and detailing can offset that weakness. Syndicate, released the same year, similarly used the hi-res VGA mode.

Shouldn't the Amiga be able to have at least 32 colors? It doesn't look like it has any more colors than the DOS version, which would make it more likely that the VGA hires pallette was the lowest denominator.

Amiga had 32 colours, or 64 in halfbrite mode IIRC. It could also do HAM for even more, and the "copper" function of the Agnus chip gave everyone those beautiful sky gradients.

Did the Sega CD version ever come to light? They had a feature on it in one of the late-1994 issues of EGM (not sure of the issue number, but I remember it was the one that came out in November). I'd check, but I dumped mine years ago.
