My first emulation was Clock Tower with the SNESxW emulator, I think, last summer.

I honestly don't remember how exactly I came across it, but mine was Nesticle sometime in '97 or so. I remember being extremely excited to play Castlevania III and the Mario games again after my NES died. Good times...

Sparcade. Ran Bomb Jack perfectly. Also the first time I saw the beloved Terra Cresta in its true arcade form, having played it a lot on my Commodore 64. Then the single game emus for Rygar and Black Tiger. All MS-DOS on my 486-66.
Many emus didn't have sound back then, so I played with a audio CD in the drive. :-)

In 1999 when I first got a hold of a computer, I was looking for info on Final Fantasy 4 and somehow ended up on some site that fan-translated FF5. They said I needed an emulator to play the game, and at the time I thought that an emulator was a port or a drive that let you plug in Snes games to the PC.

I guess it was Gokujyou Parodius with ZSNES 1.42. Or was it 1.41? Too lazy to go check the website's version history...

My first overall experience with emulation of any sort was the Sierra Roberta Williams Anthology in 1996. They had an Apple II emulator on there so you could play Mystery House, Wizard and the Princess, and Time Zone.
When I was in 8th grade, I had an epiphany. I owned (and actually still do, although many of its pixels are dead) a Game Gear and I always wondered if I could somehow get my hands on a copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog (which I could never find anywhere). I can't exactly remember how I got there but I eventually found the SMS version and BRSMS (or as I remember that lousy SMS emulator that used general midi) in late 1998. Had Nesticle, Genecyst, and Mame32 V.22 which ran slow as molasses on my old Pentium1 by the end of the day. SNES took longer, I was using Snemul for a few months because ZSNES kinda sucked back in those days then SNES9x appeared.
God I've been doing this for fifteen years now.

VGB-DOS, a bunch of Japanese GB games like Afterburst, Super Bikkuriman, Final Reverse, and Volleyfire.
Soon after came Pasofami with the old "Split-cart" rom format and "conversion-to-FM" sound output. Mostly played Rollerball, Gyruss, and Rush 'n Attack on that.
This was probably around 1995.

Super Street Fighter II, ZSNES, probably around 2001. Me and my brother had only placed Special Champion Edition at that point, and when he were first on the Internet finding out about all these other versions of SFII, we wanted to play them all.

For me, I was at a friend's house about ten or fifteen years ago and his cousin was running Super Mario Brothers 2 through NESticle on his laptop. I thought it was the most amazing thing and immediately became addicted to emulation as a makeshift hobby. I love hooking my laptop up to my 47 inch LED TV and playing Gameboy games full screen just because I can..... and because it looks ridiculous.

I don't remember whether I've said so yet or not, but would you believe I still use that ?

Geez, I feel old.
GenEM? Super PasoFami? Virtual SWC? Virtual SMC? fMSX-DOS? iNES (man, Marat was a douchebag).
It was a massive deal when SNES96 first added sound support.
