I just realized I had been looking at this one without noticing the differences for a long time: Guy with jetpack. Gundam. Man, I definitely prefer the western art for that one over the Japanese art. That's one of the few cases where I can honestly say that. -Tom

If you trust Wikipedia, the developer of Burai Fighter is KID, a Japanese company.

How western a game is Burai Fighter, anyway? Weren't Taxan games programmed in Japan? We'd talked a little about this in an older thread (about Ken Lobb...I'd link you to it but I can't find it myself thanks to the worthless search feature). It was an odd but kind of cool situation; Taxan developed a bunch of games with the western market in mind, and most of "their" games (i.e., not games like Mappy Land that they licensed) were developed by Japanese developer KID...and those games were produced/overseen by Ken Lobb.

www.hardcoregaming101.net/japanboxes/japanboxes.htmThis is a greatly expanded version of an article I did nearly five years ago, which featured Japanese box artwork for Western developed games. It used to cover about 14 games, now it features something like 60. Naturally, there were plenty I missed the first time, and with Western development taking over on HD platforms, we're seeing more game covers adapted for Japanese tastes.

The Japanese ModNation Racers cover provides an interesting analogue to the Western phenomenon of "American Kirby is Hardcore." They do it to Japan, too! =P

He looks more Asian to me, like a poor man's version of Lupin III in futuristic gear.

Excellent update. I love the American artwork on Demon Stone. Very awesome. Also, I am officially disappointed you didn't feature the European cover for Heavy Rain: www.ps3blog.net/wp-content/uploads/100113025723Heavy_Rain_European_box_art.jpgThey even made it available in hi-res to print off, for users who didn't like the US cover art. www.justpushstart.com/2010/02/23/get-an-alternate-cover-for-heavy-rain/Terrible game in hindsight, but I was rather pleased to see a publisher taking cover art variations so seriously. Anyone here have experience with games which have alternate covers on the inside of the jacket? Not just fancy art, but an actual alternate cover. Someone told me Gungrave on PS2 had a really wacky alternate cover on its inside.

Some releases in Germany have turnaround covers with the exact same art, but without the huge rating labels.
I still think this needs the old Tomb Raider games.

I've still got a zip online with what I collected a while back: www.derboo.de/files/covers-tombraider.zipVarying quality, though, and not all covers are from the same platform (there are a few PC and DC covers in between).

Thanks! Updated with the TR shots, plus a Mass Effect comparison I had forgotten before.
Also broke it up into 6 pages, because they were just too long with 3.

I just read the Japanese Police Quest II differences on the blog (felt it was related) and just about died laughing at the Captain's purple afro. =P [edit] Reading back through this article, though, the Heavy Rain JP cover makes a lot more sense if you've played the game, since it's supposed to represent the Origami Killer's modus operandi: trapping his victims in storm drains and letting them drown.

The Japanese X blades cover is the Same in Europe although the PS3 version in Japan has edited artwork she is wearing Red Shorts it is not Edited in the European Ps3 version. The game Play It Pinball on Ps2 in Europe has two different covers no idea why its not a Age rating change thing either it's got the same rating for both covers. Also they printed the Intruction book with both cover artworks as well kinda odd since the publisher was Budget one. The Ps2 games Endgame and eternal Ring both Have Rendered and ugly 3D models for Their covers in America but both have the exact same covers in Europe but Endgame has a Real person on the cover whilst eternal ring has been turned into a painting. ktn87kingsfield.webs.com/eternalring.htm
