The Japanese covers of Far Cry 2 and Dark Sector are exactly the same in Europe. I don't see the point of having them in the article.

Good point, I'd say. Too bad nobody's been replying in any way.

It's kind of because I don't care. It doesn't really invalidate the premise of the article so I don't see the point of removing them.

If the European releases came before the Japanese ones then it means that those covershots aren't Japanese artworks, but merely European covers, hence Western artworks of Western games which would be pretty pointless to have in such an article that tries to cover artistic and cultural differences between "Japan" and the "West".

But they're still how Western games look on Japanese shelves. And since they are different from the American artwork - and in the very least of Dark Sector, is a North American game (not sure where Farcry 2 was developed...is that still Crytek or was that somewhere with Ubi?) they still warrant inclusion.

I always thought they liked breasts more (see: the JP Spartan: Total Warrior cover) But yeah, they certainly love butts too. ON TOPIC: What an excellent article! I gotta say that, regarding Spartan: Total Warrior, I don't remember there being any woman in the game at all. Medusa may count, but that was one of the villains. And she wasn't blonde. I can't remember, I haven't played it in years. Maybe in one of the later levels a female joined your army or something. Maybe Sega ACTUALLY added it to the cover for "assuring homophobic Japanese men that they weren't buying anything too gay". I LOL'd at that line. But seriously, it could be either that or they thought "tits = SALES!". acidonia: From what I saw of the JP X-Blades PS3 cover, the only difference is that they cover up the main character's butt a bit. SCEI does not like butts it seems (unless we're talking about Heavy Rain. They probably didn't censor that shower scene over there, right?) Also, on the topic of Western games' Japanese cover art, it seems that the covers of the Western games Square releases are the same as its American and European counterparts. Just look at the JP covers for stuff like Modern Warfare 2, Blur, Black Ops, Arkham Asylum and the Eidos titles they now release (Just Cause 2, Kane & Lynch 2, etc.). The only thing they changed for one of those was the name of one of them (Blur was called Blur Racerz over there), and they released two editions of one of those (the subbed and the dubbed editions of Black Ops). I'm not saying that they should change the covers (after all, who would want to see anime-ish representations of the Modern Warfare 2 guys?), but at least I want to see a brand new cover for them. FAKE EDIT: Despite the fact that they changed the main character from black to white on the Crackdown cover, the back cover still keeps the black guy. image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/930144_70586_back.jpg

Well, in Japan. Big Mutha Truckers had a differnet cover. It shows a picture of a truck. Plus, the name was change into Bakusou Convoy Densetsu - Otoko Hanamichi America Roman. Well, in North America. Big Mutha Truckers includes all of the characters, and the stuff the player can do. Also, it has cautions on the cover. Well, like the bikers, and police. Also, it's like a cover for Grand Theft Auto.

Sega's Virtual Console page shows the Japanese cover artwork of Comix Zone, which was developed by STI if I recall correctly. vc.sega.jp/vc_comix/The artist was obviously going for an "Amecomi"-style, which makes wonder why they didn't just keep the original cover art in the first place. It's not a bad illustration though, but Alissa's neck is way too broad for a woman's and the way Sketch is screaming (and the fact that there's two of him) looks too odd.

I honestly quite like that JP Comix Zone artwork. It's pretty badass. And while looking through Sega's JP VC site, I noticed that the ToeJam & Earl page actually has translations of the words most commonly used in the game, and those of the items, since, back when the game was originally released, Sega of Japan apparently thought it was a great idea to release it completely in English. There are some typos, though, such as "A HUMBURGER", "ROCET SKATES", and "FUDGE SUNDEE". Still, it's pretty awesome that Sega went to the trouble of putting that for it's VC release. vc.sega.jp/vc_toejam/Wonder if they'd actually do the same if Panic on Funkotron gets released there.

That's because Toejam & Earl was left completely in English for the Japanese Mega Drive as well when it was originally released there in 1992 for some reason. As far as I know, Panic in Funkotron never had a Japanese release.

Well, just because I'm bored as hell, here's some more covers! It's probably gonna be quite a lengthy post, so get ready: Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding/Tenku: Freestyle Snowboarding image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/1/472131_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/1/472131_26234_front.jpg (JP) Amped 2/Tenku 2 image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/589768_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/589768_24210_front.jpg (JP) inFamous 2 image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/989945_199739_front.jpg (US) (it's also used for the Euro/Australian Special Edition) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/989945_172314_front.jpg (EU/Australia) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/989945_202489_front.jpg (JP) OFF TOPIC: Isn't it weird how the two inFamous games got CERO Z ratings over there? Deus Ex: Human Revolution image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/944088_97915_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/944088_172055_front.jpg (JP) (it was also used as the cover for the Augmented Edition) In some minor note, there's the Midnight Club games which, despite having the same covers as their US/European versions, remove the kanji from the game's logo, possibly to avoid confusion and legal issues with the Wangan Midnight franchise. TOCA Race Driver 3 image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/926744_63329_front.jpg (US/EU) (the Euro version has different cars, though) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/926744_95882_front.jpg (JP) I could include TOCA Race Driver 2, but the JP cover's the same as the American one, unless there's an exception for the Euro cover. The original Race Driver was strangely not released there (same with DiRT) Destroy All Humans! image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/9/920589_54313_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/9/920589_114879_front.jpg (JP) (had to put this one since it's bigger, but bar the THQ Collection stuff and the lack of Sega on the re-release they're the same) The Getaway image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/9/914419_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/9/914419_26231_front.jpg (JP) (it's the same as the Euro version; same with its sequel) The Getaway: Black Monday image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/914984_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/914984_69445_front.jpg (JP) Area 51 (Saturn) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/196624_50171_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/196624_14376_front.jpg (JP) (the PS1 version shares the same cover as the western versions) FlatOut/Racing Game Chuui!!!! (seriously) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/6/919116_61655_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/6/919116_53692_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/6/919116_69448_front.jpg (JP) Smuggler's Run/Crazy Bump's: Kattobi Car Battle image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/0/914420_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/0/914420_27320_front.jpg (JP) NOTE: There's a later re-release which uses the western boxart but with the Japanese logo and name. Downforce image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/518958_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/518958_4414_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/518958_5077_front.jpg (JP) Commandos: Strike Force image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/921093_55133_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/921093_77315_front.jpg (JP) Conflict: Desert Storm/Conflict Delta: Wangan Sensou 1991 image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/0/562160_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/0/562160_6402_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/0/562160_65730_front.jpg (JP) Godzilla: Save the Earth/Godzilla Kaijuu Dairansen: Chikyuu Saishuu Kensen image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/6/920436_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/6/920436_58726_front.jpg (JP) Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee/Godzilla Kaijuu Dairansen image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/559915_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/559915_27660_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/559915_70179_front.jpg (JP) Dead to Rights image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/472138_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/8/472138_1913_front.jpg (JP) (the cover might be from a reprint, though, since it has the newer CERO logo) War of the Monsters/Kaijuu Daigekisen: War of the Monsters image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/9/561529_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/9/561529_27044_front.jpg (JP) The Mark of Kri image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/561063_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/561063_44943_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/561063_20296_front.jpg (JP) Rayman Revolution image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/446433_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/446433_18449_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/3/446433_26221_front.jpg (JP) Tom & Jerry in War of the Whiskers/Tom & Jerry: Hige Hige Daisensou image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/530594_front.jpg (US/EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/4/530594_27395_front.jpg (JP) Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/563115_front.jpg (US) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/563115_22995_front.jpg (EU) image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/5/563115_22996_front.jpg (JP) And I realized that I never played almost all of the games I put here.

Sorry for bumping the thread again, but here's one that's quite weird: the Japanese cover for MicroProse's dreadful Super Strike Eagle. The US version has some typical combat flight game cover: two planes, one of them getting destroyed. Typical stuff. The Japanese cover, however, while still having some planes on it, it also adds a pinup-style woman on it. A topless one, I might add. Maybe they thought that would sell the shitty little game?

I kind of like how wildly different Smuggler's Run and Crazy Bumps are for being boxes for the same game. The eyes in the ski mask and the tire tracks in the mud both look silly, though I get the feeling Smuggler's Run wasn't supposed to look silly.
