Nice read (the final boss sure looks like a real treat), but I'm wondering as of why the name's being transcripted to Air Gallet when the Japanese name is aku-u gallet. The name Air Gallet also appears in-game, but still it's kinda confusing why Gazelle would have two different names for one game...and what is a gallet supposed to be anyway? Or aku-u...I love it when articles offer some background on names, like the Raizing and Cladun ones just did.

What springs to mind is Eyuu Densetsu / The Legend of Heroes.

That's because we probably have no idea. "Akuugallet" or whatever the Japanese name might be transliterated as is probably one of those nonsense words like XEXEX that just might sound cool, but someone tried to English-ize the name a bit. Not that anyone knows what an air gallet is...

If I ever find the leisure to weed through a MAME list for games with differing names between flyers and title screen, I'm gonna prove it to you. Don't hold your breath, though. My quess for this title (really just a guess): One of the possible readings for 空 is aku, I'd say it's some kind of pun with that.

A lot of arcade games have different names depending on the region. Cannon Dancer/Osman, Rayforce/Gunlock, Black Tiger/Black Dragon, Rastan/Rastan Saga (seriously, why did they drop "Saga" for the US release?), Bomberman World/Dyna Blaster, Gokujou Parodius/Fantastic Journey, Crime Fighters 2/Vendetta, Vulcan Venture/Gradius II, Gunforce II/Geostorm. I can't think of any others, but there are more out there.

Obviously games often get different names depending on the region, but why have two names - neither of which makes any sense - for just one region? Too bad there doesn't seem to be any info available about it, but the alternative reading of 空 is a nice tidbit, that might be worth mentioning as a sidenote in the article.

This appears to have a World revision of it, though - there is a version that uses the Japanese logo.
Does that kanji have a double consonant, i.e. "aku" or "akuu"?

The kanji's reading in question actually is just "a", followed by a hiragana "ku" (which is a short u) (空く). And even if it would have been "akuu", it'd still be rather odd, as the in-game katakanas are not akuu, but aku-u, with a break in between the last two vocals. If it was akuu, it'd be アクー、not アクウ.

If it's indeed related to the kanji at all, it's a very elaborate pun, as 空 read as aku doesn't actually mean "Air" at all. Other options could be a name somehow related to the game (like if there was a plane called Acoo Gallet or whatever) or words transcribed from a language we don't know.
