I think an entire SiliconEra comments section ended up derailed by arguments over Agarest. And I enjoyed that game, but I also wrote the kusoge entry because I could see how pointlessly obtuse its systems were. Speaking of which, the Weekly Kusoge entry on Record of Agarest War lacks a byline. Was this intentional?

Initially, yes. I suppose I might as well put it back in now.

has anyone mentioned the bizarre snes fighter known as Matsumura Kunihiro Den? it's....i don't know. i can't really explain anything, other than the aesthetics are freakishly goofy and it's a fighting game where you can't block. no no, that boring old mechanic is now replaced by having invincible taunts and flying around the stage like you're playing fatal fury with rollerblades. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-mg1HJ5Xv8

/me watches video. Well, that was... odd. Looking up his name, Kunihiro Matsumura (link in Japanese) is a real-life comedian and impressionist, so at least we know the game (link also in Japanese) was definitely not meant to be serious. Your avatar, by the way, reminds me that one day, there ought to be an entry on the arcade game Survival Arts. It's obvious they wanted to mix Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat in one unbeatable package, but they had neither the budget nor the design talent to pull it off. The final boss being a Carrot Top lookalike in a t-shirt, pants, a headband, and a "sorcerer's cloak" bought from Wal-Mart is the icing on the cake.

and that explains why in vs mode, everyone's face is replaced by him....
and yeah, there should be. i'm kind of at an odd position with survival arts myself though, i actually do sorta like how good the animation is and how smooth the gameplay is....but then moves do like 70% damage and it's like okay wait

That reminds, I realy hope someone eventualy translates Maka Maka. I heard it was pretty bad, but it can't realy be played with walkthrough alone, at least not by me.

I can do Savage Warriors and Guardians of the 'Hood. I've played both of those games more than I'd care to admit and they're both terrible. Guardians of the 'Hood is the spirtiual successor to Pit Fighter, so just on that, you know what you're in for. Savage Warriors is one of those bad fighting games that tries to hard to be edgy and doesn't try hard enough to be playable. I'm sure I can find some terrible stuff on monochrome Gameboy. As for obscure systems, I can dig through my X68000 stuff (there is an awful lot of crap on that system considering how much awesome stuff there is) and hopefully come out with something interesting. If you're going to cover some crappy monochrome GB stuff, might I suggest Vattle Giuce?

It looks like Vattle Giuce was made by IGS. I may have to check this one out just because I normally think of IGS and good games.

Just to clarify, that IGS is not the one that made the PGM hardware, the one I think Kurt once refered to as the Taiwanese SNK. That's a different company with a similar name.
The IGS that made that game was responsible for stuff like Alien vs Predator SNES and Dahna Megami Tanjou. And releasing the SNES version of The Rocketeer.
I too was quite confused about that once.

There are two different IGS companies? That's very interesting. All this time I thought they were the same thing. I'm familiar with a few of old IGS' games, mostly IQ Block and Dahna Megami Tanjou. They're not horrible, but certainly not great.
Edit: I tried out Vattle Giuce today. I don't get it. It doesn't seem like a bad game. It kind of feels like a very primitive version of the Ray series with the diving down to hit ground based enemies. It does seem kind of lazy that bosses are fought on a plain white background. Also, the flickering does get a little annoying, but most shooters on 8-bit platforms have that problem. Is there something I'm missing?

On Dog Day, what's the context of that image of the girl punching the guy? Is that some kind of easter egg?

I think it's from the PS1 port's credits, since it says that they added a FMV for the credits on that port.

Also, on the subject of Vattle Giuce. I played through it and I don't see anything realy wrong with it. Sure, the later levels get a bit chalenging with changing altitude to shoot down the turrets, down that's not realy so bad. Plus the boss designs are all different (and somewhat interesting) which is more then can be said of other games I've played (*coughDarwin4078cough*).

In the Driller Tanks article, the main enemies are refered to as "Mammuts". I wonder where hat stemmed from, since they not only look perfectly like serpents to me in-game, but also undoubtedly on the cover shot provided in the article. Also, the secondary enemy is named an "insect-like", when the cover clearly depicts them as crabs, with their in-game appearance not ruling this out (they just look like any kind of arachnid....which actually means they are anything but an insect-like, since insects don't have 8 legs, unlike the enemies found in Driller Tanks).

In defense of the text, their sprites rather look like six-legged with a pair of antennae
