Something that might be worth adding; the US ports of Raiden for the Genesis/SNES were called 'Raiden Trad'. I think 'Trad' stands for 'traditional?'

I think that was in the original document but I took it out, because it seemed like more of a guess than anything.
What's really weird though? The Japanese Mega Drive version is called, in English, Raiden Trad, but the kanji says Raiden Densetsu like most of the other home ports. It's baffling.

From what I understand, 伝説 (Densetsu) can be translated as 'Tradition' as well as 'Legend' or 'Folklore'.
I guess they went for 'Trad' just to be different from everyone else.

Another remark - though this is a matter of opinion - one thing I'm not willing to credit Raiden II for is that it has awesome music. The first one was alright, mainly thanks to the choice of soundchip, was is capable of punchy, driving basslines. The original Raiden II music puts me to SLEEP, it's a really uninspired (but quite memorable nonetheless), thinly-layered, muffled-sounding amateurish soundtrack. The drum samples do not 'drive' nearly as much as those of the first Raiden. The Raiden DX music is better, but still far away from what I'd call awesome.
Now Raiden Fighters - there's an awesome soundtrack, very uplifting and hear-rate stimulating. I get goosebumps every time I play the train level in the second one.
But, as I said, music is entirely a matter of opinion - so what do you think.

I actually prefer the soundtracks of the first two Raiden Fighters games over the old-school soundtracks myself. My favorite one might be the final stage music for RF1; total techno-rave explosion of awesome. I personally think RFJ's soundtrack isn't quite as awesome as the first two RFs, but A: That's just me, and B: It's still very good and fitting for the game's mood.

Raiden III is now available on Gog and Steam!
With the upcoming Raiden V and the emulations of Raiden II and DX, this is officially the Raiden year!

I actually decided to get Raiden Legacy from GoG just now. Fun games, but it's annoying that it has limited continues. I think Raiden 1 gave me like 2? That's silly for a game I paid to own, if I wanna continue my way to the end, let me! (Hell, if I had my way, I'd turn on a god mode cheat at all times) It's like, I'm on a keyboard guys, cut me some slack? (Mind you, I really should get around to buying a decent quality PC gamepad)

Oh wow, I'm such a huge asshole. This was the thread I got that "densetsu" = "traditional" thing from, thanks to Trickless etc for being on to something (pretty sure it can be used that way). By the way, Raiden III just got a Steam release too, and I think IV OverKill came out not too long ago. Definitely the Year of Raiden, although V isn't being released until next year.
While I'm here... eh, I don't really understand the hate for keyboards. They're pretty good for anything that isn't analog based from my experience, though games needing shoulder buttons (Metroid and MMX) can be a problem. For the record, I was raised on console games and their controllers, and didn't get into emulation or PC gaming until later on in life. In fact, for some reason I find it hard to play a game with a controller again, keyboards are just too comfortable most of the time. Somehow I could play GE and PD as a kid; somehow I find it hard to now.
Speaking of which, I don't get the hate for the N64 controller either, other than the stick wearing down into nothing like it does. The point of the controller is that you're meant to hold it in a particular way depending on the kind of game you were playing, and I don't think any devs stepped outside of these bounds except to use Up or the L button as the missing Select button. Problem is, most of the 2D games were on the Saturn and PS instead, so the surprisingly decent d-pad goes underutilized; it was pretty good for playing GB Pokemon through Stadium, that's for sure.

(edit: Didn't notice I even posted in this thread until after I made this post.)
Not happy with all the Raiden III bashing. The mistakes with Raiden III are not the mistakes anyone's actually talking about. Instead, they bash III as a game, even though said game is a potentially more interesting than Raiden or Raiden II. Despite your insistence that it's an "ok game", you're still calling it an inferior product to the older games as if Moss made some huge mistake... they really didn't!
Complaining about the green laser really bugs me, as it's a more useful weapon than either the blue laser and the purple laser, which are basically useless in every game. The purple laser is cool, yes, but still useless. (Actually, the blue laser gets more use in III and IV than it ever does in the earlier games.)
Yes, you get to make fun of the music; however, you only get to make fun of most of the music, as the first three stage (earth stages) themes are pretty stellar, much stronger than most of the music from the first two games. It should be noted that the composer is the same composer who was behind Raiden Fighters and 2, as well as Raiden II (the dude is diverse), and he was likely specifically asked to make most of the Raiden III music that way (just like with RF/2). Speaking of which, it's funny that you call RF music "remarkable", as most people would say it's just a bunch of same-y near-rave techno. (I wouldn't, because I'm not so shallow... that's not the point.)
I'm really not happy with the comparison to KOF2001:
1. Americans don't play KOF, so for the most part, they don't "get" to say anything even remotely relating to KOF as a game. Seriously.
2. The thing is, the only really bad KOFs are '94 and '96, and maybe XII; even strange-playing games like the '99~2001 trilogy are at least fun to play.
3. Combine the two above points: most people who bash KOF2001, and only KOF2001 (so not '96, for example) are silly Americans who bash it for nonsensical reasons that have nothing to do with the game itself.
4. Following from the above, a lot of people who bash Raiden III are doing so for bizarre reasons. They talk about "fun", yet they don't really play the Raiden games at all! And now that IV exists, a game intended to be strictly better much like II had been, the bandwagon of III's supposedly poor quality will never die and will never be examined properly. Meanwhile, people will at least respect the original Raiden for "starting something", even though Raiden III never gets similar respect.
Yes, Moss is the old Raiden team, or at least what's left of it.
OverKill could do with being mentioned, and it recently got announced for a Steam release!
And again, Raiden V has been announced, but Moss still doesn't want to show anyone what it's like just yet. Also, Microsoft moneyhatted them into making it an Xbox One title, which means it's probably gonna sell really poorly in Japan at first, even if it did get ported to PC. They really need to get it on PS4 as soon as possible.

One very minor note about differences: in the American SNES version, the CREDITS option on the option screen was removed, leaving a strange blank spot in the middle of the menu. Thus it was permanently set to 1. (allowing one continue in 1P mode and none in 2P) Whereas in the SFC it could be set to 1-3 (I think in 2P mode, one credit is consumed to start and the remaining are shared)

Anybody here able to get Raiden IV: Overkill to work on Steam? The game always crashes for me at startup.
