Nice to see Den Den Town represented. Did you go to the Mandarake Complex in Akiba? The gaming section is one of the representative—and so are the prices unfortunately—and since it was only built a few years back, it feels a lot more elegant than the shack shops.

Nah - I only saw it during my last trawl through the streets and didn't have time. Didn't realize it was new - may last experiences there didn't turn up anything gaming.

You're making things overly difficult for me here, really. My stay in China is about to end in August, so I was thinking on eventually going to Japan again for a week or twoo afterwards, but then I more or less decided to save the money...and then you and your pics and impressions come along and I being to drool, thinking back at how awesome Akihabara was and probably still is. *sigh* PS: Gotta see some pics of all the stuff you bought. Pretty please.

I only really took a picture of the stuff I bought on the first day - some of it I've already properly shelved, but here's that: This includes: -That Snatcher pamphlet mentioned in today's blog post -The two Touhouvania doujin games -A dancing PS2 game I forget the title of (it was like 100 yen) and the Sakura Taisen PS2 remake -Phantom Brave LE (was 800 yen, plus it's my fave N1 title) -Boxed Famicom - Ys, Fire Emblem, Wai Wai World 2, Quarth, Yume Penguin Monogtari -Boxed SFC: Contra Spirits -Two Shooting Gameside books -Phantasy Star - Mark III -PSOne games: Henry Explorers, Hermie Hopperhead, Mitsumete Knight -Soundtracks: Konami Shooting Battle I, Espgaluda, some SST (Sega) selection -A few Touhou games -Haja no Fuuin Famicom (I wanted the Mark III version, since it came with a figure and a map...but this one also came with a figure and a map, and was 600 yen. I couldn't find the Mark III one so this had to do.) -That Genpei Toumaden board game. Maybe Joseph Joestar can explain to me what the hell this is, but it was really cheap. -Falcom Magazine (really just a free advertisement) -A 100 yen junk Arkanoid controller.

Haha, some great stuff for just one day! But you seem to have been buying just about anything you saw that looked to be interesting and cheap enough for a quick purchase, rather than concentrating on stuff you already wanted beforehand or only on the best of the best stuff, right? I was exactly the same, especially last year in February, when I sent home a huge package filled with all kinds of stuff from Tokyo and Fukuoka...only to change my habits a few months later and sort out about half of the stuff.

The only real thing on my "to get" list was boxed Konami Famicom carts, and whatever else looked interesting. I didn't expect to buy as many soundtracks as I did, but I couldn't resist.
There were a few things I couldn't find, like some of those Sega online-only albums, like the ones for Alex Kidd and Phantasy Star. I'll probably try to get those elsewhere.
I had a ton of other non-shopping goals, most of which I accomplished, but failed a few. We went to try to see some cosplayers at Yoyogi Park on Sunday, but there were none in the morning/early afternoon. It was probably too hot. I also couldn't find the Castlevania arcade game - the online locator pointed to one in Osaka, but we couldn't find it. I did find Silent Hill Arcade though, and even Metal Gear Arcade, which I didn't even know existed.

Castlevania Arcade is as crappy as it gets with highly imprecise controls. Silent Hill is at least very well playable. Didn't know about the MGS one either, though. Is it new? And I know hard it can be to find specific stuff al while trudging through heaps and heaps of other great stuff you just don't want, because you're looking for something else. Happened to me with Dodonpachi and when one finally showed up in a Trader one day, I felt it was too expensive, went home, returned to the Trader on the following day to get it anyway, but alas, it was already gone.

On a more serious note, please tell us more about the Falcom magazine/advertisement. Is it old, new, does it cover old or new? Chance of scans? What kind of Falcom stuff did you see while there, generally speaking?

It's 95% about Ao no Kiseki, with bits and pieces about the other, more recent games in the series. They must've really found success with the series - I saw a fairly large display in non-gaming stores like Animate advertising it, so they must be a hit with the anime/manga otaku crowd.
