www.hardcoregaming101.net/etheria/etheria.htmThe PlayStation 2 action brawler The Sword of Etheria, otherwise known as OZ ~Over Zenith~ in Japan. I was familiar with this game for a long time, since the music was composed by Michiru Yamane and it sounded a lot like a Castlevania game, but only recently gave it a shot. Even though it was localized for European release, it never hit North America, which is a huge shame, because it's easily one of the better overlooked action titles on the system. It also has some very curious (and tenuous) inspirations from The Wizard of Oz.

Is there a way to volley enemies directly to the sidekicks without going through the hero's long combo each time?

Yeah, either hit Forward+Attack (which will them flying forward) or Back+Attack (which will hit them straight up in the air).

Was always curious about this one after seeing it mentioned a couple of times on The Castlevania Dungeon and hearing a snippet of the soundtrack on nolife-radio. Sounds like it's not too bad, but it definitely seems to suffer from what I've come to refer to as "Riviera Syndrome" - while clearly "inspired" by its source material, often times the inspirations are little more than borrowed names with no context.

Yeah, the OZ stuff is just random lip service. It really doesn't detract from the story, but it is awfully weird. Yeah, either hit Forward+Attack (which will them flying forward) or Back+Attack (which will hit them straight up in the air). OH, and I think you need to be locked on to an enemy for this to work.

I forgot all about this game and the song in DDR until you put up the article. Always wanted to know what it was!

That was how I was introduced to the game. (Awesome song/steps, too.)

Is Junichi Murakami a big name in Japan? If yes, what for? The original cover reads "Junichi Murakami Produce," which coming from a Japanese publisher seems like a really rare thing to me. The only earlier game I can find his name in attached to in any significant magnitude is Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, though.

There was a period of time when Konami was putting the name of their producers on the cover, even if in tiny type. When I interviewed one of the guys working on Castlevania Resurrection, he said it was part of their initiative to build brands for different staff members, like Hideo Kojima. It didn't quite work out in the end and I don't think they do it anymore, but it was cool of them to give credit like that, even to lesser known folks.
