www.hardcoregaming101.net/astal/astal.htmThis early Saturn title is really pretty, with some great 2D art. But the game itself is sort of not that interesting. And the hero is really doofy looking - Sega did the same thing with Nights and then wondered why that floundered. (No offensive to Nights, of course, because that's actually a much better game than Astal here.)

I swear this game reminds me so much of Treasure's Silhouette Mirage. There must be a connection.

Back when I was a kid, my cousin had a Saturn (I think she was the only other person I knew who had one) and had this and a couple of fighting games for it. This game blew my mind. The graphics were amazing, the sound and voice overs I thought were incredible, and I thought the way Astal lifted up trees and tossed them was super cool. I also thought the evil eye boss was awesome and extremely hard, but I sucked back then, so I could probably whup it now.
I haven't played this game in over ten years, and when I heard this was going to be on the site, I thought it was some kind of lost classic. After reading the article, yeah this game looks like other games try to do what it does, but better. Still, it's pretty cool that there's an article on it now.
