Nintendo make great games but everything else they do is like they still live in the 1980's.
Because they still do stuff like this. Quote: Many thanks for your email. The bonus role-playing mini-game called Professor Layton's London Life will not be available to European fans. Localising software remains a high priority for Nintendo; however, in this instance it would have significantly delayed the European launch of the game. We took this decision as Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call is bursting to the brim with brand new puzzles and a surprising and captivating storyline. We wanted to make sure our European fans could get their hands on the game this year. Many Thanks
The Nintendo Team
So yeah you read that right Europe gets a totaly gimped version even though the series sells the most copys in Europe. You would never see Microsoft or Sony doing this.

I remember getting my very own NES with super mario bros and I have been spending far too much time in this hobby from that point forward.
That being said the company culture of the Nintendo Japan is quite backwards:
"Customers do not want online games." -Satoru Iwata President of Nintendo
"[People who play RPGs are] depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games" -Hiroshi Yamauchi Former President and Chairmen of Nintendo
"I have been saying this for some time, but customers are not interested in grand games with higher-quality graphics and sound and epic stories. Only people who do not know the videogame business would advocate the release of next-generation machines when people are not interested in cutting-edge technologies." -Hiroshi Yamauchi Former President and Chairmen of Nintendo
Now we are lucky to get a glimpse of the company cultural standpoint from the public faces of the company. Whether or not you believe the Wii is successful it is clear that Nintendo does not value RPG gamers or those that like to play online or think that graphics are important. They do not put too much effort into those endeavors and thus they lag behind the others in the industry. Because of their massive install base 3rd parties have attempted to put RPGs and online play on the system, and done so better than Nintendo. If Nintendo can do an about face and put out the kind of high end graphical polish that other companies can, even if they do not value such a thing, it would be surprising. Innovation is sometimes by leaps and bounds but in a company setting often it is a matter of small steps at a time, and Nintendo is behind by quite a few miles from their competitors in this things that they have admitted had no value to them. If the Wii U does not garner a sufficient install base to allow the 3rd parties to make up for what Nintendo lacks, I think the days of Nintendo as an industry leader are over and done (unless another company buys them out).

[People who play RPGs are] depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games" -Hiroshi Yamauchi Former President and Chairmen of Nintendo . LOL!!! The truth hurts. I only play RPGs when my social life is flat. And it frequently is. That said, if you wanna make money, you shouldn't judge the patheticness of your audience! But Nintendo is not failing just because of no RPGs for the Wii. To be honest, I doubt whether or not them bringing over Xenoblade is really the reason why they're failing. I mean, RPGs aren't really that popular in North America, outside of portables. No, the real key here is that they lack in just about every genre. Never mind the RPGs, they don't have many FPS games, they don't have a lot of hardcore action games, and where were they when Street Fighter 4 was being released on every system on the planet except the Wii? Nobody is going to get the 3DS version just to see 3d Street Fighter 4 which they already own on the PS3 and 360. And aside from the 3d, the graphics aren't even as good as the 360 and PS3 versions anyway. These are costly financial misses for the company.

Persona 4 got me through a pretty lonely time period, when I moved to a new place and knew next to no one. If anything, RPGs should be praised for helping people escape reality for little awhile. Anyway, ex-CEO Yamauchi was known for being kind of a douche, but knowing he said that makes me feel splendid that I hacked my Wii. I'm playing Xenoblade whether you want me to or not ya dick!

I'd actually kind of prefer to see Nintendo go software-only, as well. It would end all of this nonsense of them making technologically inferior hardware with no third-party support and some kind of gimmick attached.

I think Nintendo got cocky with the Wii. In the news media and the casual gaming circles they were on top of the world for a short period, but the casual gaming market has always been two things: 1) extremely fickle, and 2) not stupid. Nintendo's approach to certain key features in contemporary gaming, particularly online play, are damn near contemptuous of their user base. "People don't want online gaming" my ass.
Not to mention all these dumbass peripherals that don't really do anything or are very limited in their use very quickly get on the nerves of people living in a down economy. When working in games retail, I found that many of the people I spoke to were extremely frustrated with how totally useless most of the products they got for their Wii are. Namely things like those silly baseball bat attachments and the steering wheel which range from either completely useless to only useful for a handful of titles to a downright hindrance.

The thing about Nintendo is that they're about as stuck in outdated game design philosophy as I am, so there's this uneasy peace between us.
I hold out for Nintendo because if we lose them, then we're all stuck playing modern games, and I hate modern game design.

I hold out for Nintendo because if we lose them, then we're all stuck playing modern games, and I hate modern game design. We have indie games and their developers for such games. We shouldn't give Nintendo our money because they're stuck in the past. Can't blame them though. With a track sheet like Nintendo has, why wouldn't they want to be stuck in the past? It's the "it's worked before it'll work again" philosophy, though it isn't working.

Nintendo only really makes modern games anymore, though. Or at least, their VERSION of modern games, with waggle or touch-screen controls out the wazoo instead of the classic D-pad and (maybe) analog stick. If you want a true classic feel, the PSP is the place to be. That's like, the last bastion for classic gaming. Though I'm hoping the Vita proves a worthy successor, despite its touchscreen features. Maybe the touchscreen features will be largely ignored by developers, like Sixaxis was on the PS3. I guess we can only hope! -Tom

I grew up with the NES so I kinda love Nintendo. It's been so hard since the Wii though- it's like they really aren't trying anymore even with their own big titles. Wah.

I'm not geting my hopes up, but we'll just have to see where this "Wii U" thing goes, along with Zelda and the 3DS once they get that thumb pad out.

I'm just really tired of "serious mature hardcore" games, and shit with more story than actual game. I borrowed a friend's PSP for a while, and it's a cool piece of hardware, but I still felt like the whole thing took itself a little too seriously. It could just be the games that I borrowed with the system, I do like Patapon, and it has a fine, fine version of Space Invaders Extreme. Nintendo systems, whatever faults they may have, still feel the most toy-like to me, and I'm into that. I wouldn't hold it against anyone else for having outgrown that sort of thing, though.

If they went software only they would have to get their act together with game releases and make US and Europe dates like a week apart like all other game publisher manage on 360 and Ps3.

The Wii is the first Nintendo home console I didn't purchase. I had total brand loyalty up until that system reared its ugly head. Today, I hope Nintendo goes the way of sega and just makes games for other consoles. Hadn't thought of this one yet, I'm glad my Wii and GBA are gone but I really miss Samus.
