I could have sworn there was a thread for this game already, but I couldn't find it.
Anyway, now that the game is out in Japan, has anyone played it? I'm just so god damn excited to play it and would love to hear impressions from importers.

I am very excited for Dark Souls but I am confused as to what version to buy! Anyone want to weight in?
PS3 Version
*Probably the native port *Probably a bigger community *Probably better performance (faster machine) -PowerA Pro Elite not as good
Xbox360
*Guarenteed no lag switching/cheating *Bunch of players not adept at the combat to run train on *Better controller -Paying for xbox live
I am seriously about to buy it for BOTH but with so many games out disposable income is at a premium!

Sayl, people have reported extreme frame drops at certain points in the PS3 version, so it might not necessarily be better on PS3 compared to 360 in that regard. Unfortunately no word on how the 360 version works since in Japan it's PS3 only. As for controls, they are not mappable and might seem strange on the 360 pad since the right bumper would be the main attack, and right trigger the secondary/strong attack. This feels much more natural on the PS3 controller. I'd also be surprised if any cheating would actually impact the game that much. Invaders are at a larger disadvantage now compared to Demon's Souls, and there are other means of killing/harassing players besides straight-up pvp. Maybe this will help you decide (hint: get the PS3 version anyway I've been greatly anticipating this game since it's announcement, and at less than two weeks away (at least for the US version) I'm on the verge of exploding. Everything I've seen and read about the game leads to one answer: It's superior in every way to Demon's Souls. The world is bigger, darker, more dynamic and interconnected with even more interesting monsters. Character building offers more variety, with a more elegant upgrade system. The multiplayer got an upgrade as well, since you can align yourself with certain covenants which determine who your friends and foes are, as well as other pros and cons. There's even a revenge system, and more interesting methods of harassing other players. The fundamental pace of the game is changed for the better, I think. Instead of having tons of healing items to munch on and regenerating magic, you have small stocks of each. The archstones and hub world has been replaced by campfires which act as checkpoints, but not ordinary ones of course. You'll have to judge whether to use it since they're essentially double-edged swords. Make some sacrifices to use a checkpoint or push your luck and keep going? Overall I'm just blown away by how good of a sequel it's turning out to be. I know the developers have been harping on about how it's a "spiritual successor," but nothing is further from the truth. It looks like every aspect of Demon's Souls has been taken into great consideration and better balanced for a tougher, more interesting experience. If the anticipation is killing you and you want to ruin some of the surprise there are live plays and other footage of the final game floating around. If you must, I'd recommend just skimming it and not watching long segments, but that's your business of course

I can't wait for this game to come out. I didn't pre-order it yet because I'm hoping I can go to a Wal-Mart at midnight and get it then. Justin already said most of everything I wanted to say: it seems like it will be Demon's Souls but better in every way. I am definitely not watching any live streams of playthroughs, and I'm probably not going to look at any guides until I get really far (or beat it).

I remember the day I heard that you could actually kill the red and blue dragons in Demon's Souls. It really blew my mind. Can't wait to see what new, impossible enemies you get to destroy this time around.

Also Amazon is over-sold on PS3 pre-orders, and I don't really want to give my money to Gamestop or Best Buy.

I wouldn't really bother with pre-orders most of the time, (seeing as they don't always get you stuff anyways.) But the Dark Souls pre-order extras look pretty cool.

I've only put 4 hours into it, but right now I can't say it's better than DS in every way.
At times it looks a hell of a lot better than DS, at others much worse. The "hub" area looks pretty awful, with flat lighting and blurry textures. The frame rate can get so bad it's uncomfortable to watch/play, but so far I haven't seen it happen when there are enemies on screen.
One minor gripe about the visuals- unless you go into human state, you are forced to run around as a zombie, which renders your character disgusting.
The checkpoint system works well. It's different enough from DS to be interesting, but doesn't make the game any easier. If you use a checkpoint all of your resources are refilled, including your healing item (depending on the effectiveness of the checkpoint).
The second biggest change is the Humanity stat. You gain humanity by killing bosses/minibosses and by using very rare items. You can spend humanity in various ways- returning to human form, increasing the effectiveness of checkpoints, etc.
Biggest change is of course the giant interconnected world. I'm honestly not sure if I like this yet. It gives the game a totally different feel from DS, but can be extremely inconvenient.
For example, I explored the first few areas of the Castle Town but got to a point where going any deeper was too difficult for my character. So I figured I'd go back to the "hub" area and go see what else I could find. I had unlocked some shortcuts, but it was still quite a hike just to get back, and since I had used a checkpoint it meant all the enemies had respawned. The enemies were not a problem... it was just kind of tedious to have to fight through them all over again just to be able to return to the beginning and try out a different area. In DS, I could have instantly returned to the hub and been in a different stage in under a minute.
There are items you can use to warp, but you can only go back one checkpoint. If you are deep in a stage, this will not nearly be enough to get back to where you might want to go.
I got the Japanese preorder bonuses, a soundtrack and map. Map is pretty much useless because while it lists all the areas in the city, there is no indication whatsoever how to get from one to another. It's was probably meant to be a poster rather than something you actually use to navigate the game.
Other major complaint- there is a major bug where if you play online the game will randomly freeze during the initial load. The workaround now is "play offline." Pretty awful bug, and it worries me that the game shipping in this state.
[edit] Just restarted the game. I had gone with a Magic User, but the game got ridiculous about 4 hours in. I had been focusing on boosting magic stats, but even so I got to a point in the game where it was requiring 2-4 soul arrows to take down regular enemies. You can cast that spell only 30 times per charge (you recharge at checkpoints). Since I had focused on magic and equipment stat requirements are MUCH higher than in DS, I was left with using a dagger on heavily armored enemies that could kill me in one hit. :/
Whereas starting as a Royal in DS was like easy mode, I really suggest going with a melee character in Dark Souls. I'm giving the Pyromancer a try first before I decide for sure though.

Xbox360 *Better controller That's a joke, right? With movement on the left stick and camera on the right, I have always found the 360's non-symmetrical design to be nausea inducing. I mean, why aren't the sticks level? For a system touted as being all about the FPS, I find them totally unplayable with non-symmetrical sticks; I feel like I'm being forced to write an essay left-handed. Sorry, but I always question it when people say the PSOne/PS2/Sixaxis design is uncomfortable. For digital pads the Japanese Saturn is my favourite, while for analogue sticks the Sixaxis is - I even use it on my PC for emulation. EDIT: And the reason I question this is, because everyone says it's the msot comfortable controller out there, I fear for the future when all controllers will use non-symmetrical design. Thankfully the Wii Classic Controller totally ripped off the Sixaxis design, and as such is most comfortable. But what about the next gen and beyond? I'm living on borrowed time.

I've always found the Sony controllers to feel flimsy and the analog sticks to feel imprecise. But the weird layout of the 360 sticks is definitely a problem.

The only problem i have with the 360 controller is the D-pad. That's really the only reason i'd choose play station over 360. Unless something is wrong with your wrist or hands etc, i don't see what's so bad about the 360 analog sticks.

My wrists and hands are fine. Quite possibly the best wrist and hands in the world, like every other part of my body.

It would be something if the PS3 version wound up being inferior, with Demon's Souls being the best game on the system.
I'm maintaining a media blackout. It's scary how much the stream monsters are spoiling themselves on this game.

I doubt that last part, however i wasn't talking about you alone. I meant people in general I just don't see what the issue is with the 360 controller. But i'm not about to get into that here. This is a Dark Souls thread!
