hg101.kontek.net/splaters/splaters.htmThe roots of the first person shooter are quite interesting, if mostly because no one seems to acknowledge much of anything prior to Wolfenstein 3D or Ultima Underworld. This is a weird paintball simulator for the Macintosh. It's available for download for emulators too, if you're up for giving it a go.

Something about that aesthetic to this title is really eye-catching. In stills it looks far superior to a lot of 3d games that came out around the same time. I like how over-complicated the controls are, like the designer thought it made sense I guess?

As a fan of FPSes, I loved this article! The Mac was home of some interesting entries in the genre but I've never heard of this one, and I wouldn't even have imagined the existence of such an early title. Many features described are really impressive for the time, some others are due to limitations of the same time, and the genre not being "codified" yet. This will be a good excuse to try Mac emulation for me.

There are really quite a few great FPSers that were on the scene long before Wolf 3D. Star Cruiser had virtually everything in place along with the now trendy RPG elements back in 1988: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yND5V85iPHcThe Eidolon had very sophisticated graphics and super original gameplay. Those tunnel walls are amazing for the C64 back in 1985: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-IrtXGcRGAOf course, there are a bunch of games that fit the mould that go back further. This is a pretty good rough history: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aipGP5oAuWQMissing a few key games though.

A lot of those don't really qualify for the genre called FPS. As strange as it may sound, being first person and shooting doesn't necessarily make a First Person Shooter. While by no stretch the first, Wolfenstein 3D is to FPS what Street Fighter II is to fighting games.

Yeah, I'm aware that a lot of those games don't qualify as FPSes, but it's a look at the roots of the genre, not a reel of games that can be retroactively fitted into a category that was developed much later.
