I played through Snake's Revenge by way of emulator again. This time, I did it with no save states and 2 continues. The first I spent on the tank (apparently, the trick to beating it is to lay 3 mines on the angle where the right-hand wheels will appear on, and then face the right-side of the bridge on the very bottom of it).
The second was when it came to avoiding some of the pitfalls in building 6.

And here the last two maps covering the end of the game: Main Base Parts 3 & 4I'm going to start the NES Metal Gear at some point during the week, probably Friday or Saturday. I will also be making maps, which I will post here just as before.

Even then, his back-pedaling was done in a rather backhanded way ("oh, I only said it was not good by MGS standards"). Then again, these are the same people who try to justify the bad storytelling of the later MGS games by over-analyzing every trivial insignificant detail. Game Club 199X exists within a cultural infinity loop. In 199X, nobody knows or cares who "executive produced" their game. I'm pretty sure he took his data from old issues of Nintendo Power published around the time the games were released, which listed the top-selling NES games for each month. I did. They're not exact figures, and the magazine itself was cagey about how the data was compiled. That said, if anyone knows how Famitsu did/does its sales rankings, NP probably used the same rubric.

Quick update: We've recorded the podcast. I'm whittling it down to a svelte 60 minutes or less. Hopefully up by December 1. We announce next month's randomly selected game at the end. Stay tuned!

One question about SR I've been trying to figure out:
Why did Kojima change his stance on the game: From liking it, to hating it, and back again?

Well, sometimes you start out liking something, but then you get to know it better and start hating it. Eventually you'll learn to understand and look past the flaws, and reconcile. Like your wife or your parents!

Has anyone got a source for Kojima disliking it and then later liking it again? Snakesoup website at one point claims he criticised it, but when I clicked their link it took me to some video interview (on IGN I think) where he was mainly criticising the NES port of the first again. I do believe he did criticise SR at one point, but can't find the source now. Also, I can't ever recall a reversion in opinion after that.
Anyway, my theory is this: Kojima didn't expected MGS to be the hit it became (none of his games prior had been successful), and so he was giving some honest answers to various websites during and just release.
Fast forward today where he's become this Messianic cult-of-personality to rival [INSERT DESPOT HERE]. Utterly drunk on his own success he's become ever more critical of anything which hasn't had his hand on it. I've played through MG on the NES, and Kojima is a mean sonnuvabitch when he wants to be. Yeah the game is flawed, for very good reasons, but it's still fun. It deservedly sold millions, and without it we wouldn't have SR or MG2 or MGS.
I like going through Kojima's interviews, because you can see a very noticeable sharp shift in his own opinion of his work and his opinion on the work of those close to him, once he become this steamroller. And you know what? Once he had this power his games starting going downhill (MGS3 being a strange blip). Up until around 1999 or even 2000 (prior to MGS2 anyway), he was a pretty level-headed guy.

The only time Kojima has ever referred to Snake's Revenge as a "bit of crappy game" was during a presentation he made during the Game Developer's Conference in 2009, where he gave a lecture on his involvement in the series up to MGS4. Even then, I think he was simply acknowledging the game's reputation among his more hardcore fans ("it's (considered) a bit of crappy game because I wasn't involved") than his actual feelings about the game, considering it's not consistent with the answer he usually gives when the game is brought up during interviews. www.gamespot.com/news/gdc--6206802

Awesome! Do you want this blogged about, or are you going to have a more official page on HG101 for it? Downloading now. EDIT: Listened to it. Like it, very intelligent discussion, and good fun. The intro on history of stealth dragged a bit though, I actually fast forwarded by about 5 minutes. Otherwise I'm impressed by this - as someone said, good proof of concept.

Yeah, it was actually even longer than that. I'm recommending that each member of the next podcast group show up with more of a plan than I had. I think this is the most time any one person has spent talking about Ultra Games' business model. I will see about putting this up on the main site this weekend if you guys don't mind! Please do. I hope it draws more people into this month's exercise in retro masochism.

I've been going on for years trying to tell people that Snake's Revenge is not a bad game. You guys have done great job. I really liked it and will look forward to the next one.
Would love to be in one too. I have plenty of useless gaming knowledge and wisdom worth sharing.

I'll give it a try and see how it works out. I've tried it a few times but not really concentrated on it. Should really, since Im a huge Fallout fan and would love to see where all those references come from.
