It was a robot producing exploration planet like any other Large cities, Beautiful sunsets, but then they came..... WE'LL SEND IN LOW G MAN! hg101.kontek.net/lowgman/lowgman.htmNot the best game in the NES library, since the controls and animation are janky, but there are a lot of cool stuff I dig about this game, like all of the extra weapons, the fact that you can't directly harm enemies with your default skills (since your spear can only be used up and down, and the gun only freezes enemies) and the secret areas, too. I'd wanted to do a feature on KID, the company that developed this, along with the NES GI Joe games, Kick Master, and Burai Fighter, but haven't gotten around to it. Plus I've been getting away from those company profile features because the individual games always get buried, so maybe it's for the better.

Don't forget PEPSI MAAAAAAN
...which is pretty awesome. So sad that KID went out of business.

Apparently, the Low G-Man's "real" name is "Kay". I forget where I saw this, though, so I can't confirm.
I actually really loved the hell out of this game (and Burai Fighter, and Kick Master. KID had a better track record than people are willing to say, all in all), and don't think it was bad at all. I just couldn't ever figure out how to harm the final boss.
Interestingly, Burai Fighter was published by Taito in Japan, same as Kick Master.
It might do to mention the difference between killing a frozen enemy as opposed to killing one in motion; killing an enemy in motion will yield an item 100% of the time.

I don't think Kick Master was published in Japan at all. Taito did do it in the US, and that's because Taxan had gone out of business. Same reason why GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor was published by Capcom, they bought the rights since the game was otherwise without a publisher.
Other than Burai Fighter, Recca and Isolated Warrior, many of their NES games didn't see Japanese release either, which is strange.

Fun fact: This is literally the first EVER game I remember playing. There was an old home video of me playing it as a 2-year-old babby. Thus, LGM has kind of a special place in my geeky aorta. It's not the best game ever, but it just has this offbeat techno-dystopia atmosphere that I haven't really found in any other NES title. Plus, it's fun to stab frozen jerks repeatedly. I'd love to take on Burai Fighter and Kickmaster! Those two games are deliciously underrated and deserve more props. I also may take on the G.I. Joe games even if I haven't beaten them yet... wait, I MIGHT have beaten the first, but it's been a while and my brain's not as keen as it could be. However, I'll definitely leave Pepsiman to Jojo. I think he's the one that first showed me gameplay of it after all.

It's odd to me that the main reaction to this game seems to be somewhere dead in the middle of "I don't want to call it a bad game, but it is." and "I want to say it's a bad game, but it's not." Low G-Man : Most average NES game in history?

Nah, average would imply that it's competent but unnotable. Low G Man has some cool ideas, it's just got some bad programming and could've used some better level design.

Has anyone contacted Ken Lobb? Sketcz? Are you on this?

No KID article? Joseph, I already contacted Ken a couple of years ago. Kurt was supposed to use that... "interview" for the KID article.

Has anyone contacted Ken Lobb? Sketcz? Are you on this? Funny you should mention this, when I saw his name listed thought: hey, someone should contact him!
I haven't got his contact details, but I've got some very old contact details for Ted Woolsey, who at the time worked at Microsoft. I'll try emailing and seeing if I can bypass the MS PR filter.EDIT: Never mind, only just saw that ReyVGM was on the case. Good work, man! Why in "speech marks" though? Didn't he give any good answers?

Maybe _that_ is the tactic Japanese publishers need to take now, as far as trying to have their console releases be more viable in the western market. Instead of handing development of a long-time Japanese franchise entirely over to a western team, have Western producers be the 'idea men' working with one of the Japanese development teams and see where it goes.

It was in quotes because it wasn't really an interview. Check the link I posted.
