www.hardcoregaming101.net/heartofdarkness/heartofdarkness.htmEric Chahi's follow-up to Another World/Out of this World never quite caught on. It plays very similarly, but it's really...weird. Like Out of this World was very dark and gloomy from the outset, but in Heart of Darkness, you're this goofy little kid trying to his dog, but you can get killed in the most violent ways. It's really disturbing.

Are you sure people are interested in reading the entire plot summary in the article? I beat it long ago, it's a great game and good to draw attention to it here.

Say, this game never became available on GOG, did it? I wonder why? Amazing Studio nonetheless went bankrupt after the release and ideas for their next game got turned into the film Kaena: The Prophecy instead. Hey, I remember that one. Not a great film, but a memorable one. It's easy to see some similarities in the game's screenshots.

I'd trim down the plot description. Maybe cover key areas and the like handful of plot related elements that are actually important.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Heart of Darkness was going to be the first game to have a full Orchestra score performed by an actual international Orchestra that had been written exclusively for the game but due to it's numerous delays ended up just barely missing that distinction - I believe it was the first recorded in any case? Not sure which game beat it out though.
Also it might be worth noting that the game was actually pretty well hyped but bombed on release due to it's remarkably short length more than anything else.

Indeed and because it was late, the gaming culture wasn't going to accept a relatively difficult game (really it's not that hard) with a short length like the classic GEN/SNES titles. If the game had have been 10 hours long it probably wouldn't have hit the 2nd hand market so fast.

I really didn't like this game one bit, from the first previews to the few minutes I suffered by playing. Anyway, I noticed we've covered quite a few games from this "cinematic platformer" genre, so I made a table for them: www.hardcoregaming101.net/themes.htm#cinematicplatform

One of my all-time favourites. Bruce Broughton wrote and conducted an absolutely marvelous musical score, which fortunately was also published on CD. While the game didn't offer much in terms of a plot, its few characters and their dialogue scenes were likeable enough and in my opinion, the pacing between actual gameplay and cutscenes wasn't as uneven as many people claim.

Oh, and here is a little bonus. It's the sound you get when the installation is completed ; could make for a nice OS notification sound. Attachments:

I just spotted a couple of tiny omissions in the article: "until the 2011 of From Dust" > "until the 2011 release of From Dust" "and throw in the heart of darkness" > "and throw it in the heart of darkness"

Hello. First, I'm sorry to necro the thread. I didn't see anything in the rules and regulations thread that said this was against the rules so I hope I'm not treading on any toes. I've been a big fan of this article on Heart of Darkness for a while now. It's very well made and has a lot of good resources. However, there is some information in the article that I am concerned as to the legitimacy of. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the game and have amassed a lot of articles and interviews about the game and Amazing Studio in regards to development. There's some little things like George Lucas and Jeffrey Katzenberg (Dreamworks) were also interested in producing a film of the game like Spielberg, and some larger things like the reason the game was delayed being also in part to some drama with Virgin Interactive Entertainment being the original publisher, and an issue with coding the game in C language. Amazing Studio also didn't go bankrupt. I'm not quite sure where that idea came about. I know your article was written years ago and there's not a lot of information about the game online though. They actually just left the game industry, making some music videos and then transitioned into film post production after the animators gradually moved on to larger studios which was the same reason Eric Chahi distanced himself from the games industry until From Dust. Along the way at some point they rebranded to 'Amazing -Digital- Studios' and never really achieved international attention after that. I ended up finding this out by doing some digging and checking up on what Frederic Savoir, Jerôme Combe, and Stéphane Hamache were doing after Heart of Darkness was released. I think the article on Eric Chahi's other game Another World also mentions some of these things. And what was mentioned in a previous post in this thread from Wikipedia (no longer on the article since then though) About how Amazing Studio was planning Kaena: The Prophecy to be a game, this was actually just an idea from one of the members of the studio (Chris Delaporte) who left rather early on in Heart of Darkness' development to work on it as his own project. So it was never technically affiliated with Amazing Studio.
I don't know how sourcing works here, I notice articles don't have sources on them, and that you guys likely would prefer not linking to too many outside video game sites. But I have a few articles and interviews relating to what I've said. There's not a lot of information online about Heart of Darkness that's in English. Most of my knowledge comes from being in correspondence with Frederic Savoir and a biography on Eric Chahi entitled "Eric Chahi : parcours d’un créateur de jeux vidéo français" which if it wasn't obvious XD is again, in French.
