A look at the two Eternal Champions fighting games for Sega systems, along with the various spin-offs including game books, plus links to developer interviews. These were Sega's attempt to cash in on the Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat craze. The games certainly looked great, but they weren't terribly well balanced. www.hardcoregaming101.net/eternalchampions/eternalchampions1.htmIn the UK I recall games magazines making a huge deal out of the Sega CD release, which was going to feature an 18 rating from the British Board of Film Classification, for its ultra violence. Ahh, how times have changed.

I remember reading a big 4-something page spread on the Sega CD version in Video Games magazine (I'm not sure that was the correct name, but it was the one run by staff from Tips & Tricks). I miss the days when I could read full blown profiles on fighting game characters in print mags.

What? Never heard it has so rotten of a reputation - unless only Shoryuken forum users were asked about it The two episodes of EC are those type of games where you see they had ideas but not the capabilities to gave them the best form. Would deserve a MK9-style revival, if only for the quirky cast.

There were also an adaption of EC in Sonic the Comic. stc.wikia.com/wiki/Eternal_ChampionsLooks like it also got its own special issues. I'd love to read them, in Germany we only got the first EC story before StC was canned here.

Yeah, as a kid their reputation wasn't nearly that bad if I remember. Sure it wasn't SF, KoF, or MK, but it was a nice second choice if you didn't have those games. I'd welcome a reboot of this.

Honestly, so would I, if you could get people who are talented enough behind it. I'm just saying that these days, pretty much no Mortal Kombat inspired games have gone without their reputations destroyed, regardless of their actual quality, sadly.

Yeah I reread it and noticed as DerZocker said there was a comic and it was pretty long running, should probably try to get some screens of that in the article.
And I still think the review here is a bit overly critical. Eternal Champions was competing in the home scene with the SF2 / Mortal Kombat ports - in that contemporary field it pretty much could run with the big boys. It's tricky and unforgiving but that's not a reason to say it's bad. I wonder if they're really unbalanced, did it see enough play for people to actual work out tiers.

The other thing I've seen come up a few times is that the Sega CD version apparently uses a uniquely high number of colors for a Sega CD game, but I think that's based off mistaken information.

The Elpsa rating was 18 saying that Snatcher was rated 18 in UK though.

I'll make some additions to this shortly. The Mega Cd copy I have is rated 15 but the Advert that was used in magazines had a Bloody Heart with Clock faces on a Hook said it was rated 18. The Elpsa rating was 18 saying that Snatcher was rated 18 in UK though. Interesting! I never did get it, but I think it was... Games World magazine which mentioned the age rating? I should probably dig it out.

Was a Gamefaqs earlier and somebody posted this on the top 10 whatever list. It was grabbed from a wikipedia article quoting an interview on sega-16.com
A third and a final title Eternal Champions: The Final Chapter was advertised for the Sega Saturn, but the game was cancelled shortly after beginning production, in order to push the Virtua Fighter series in the US. In an interview by Michael Latham, this decision was made by Sega of Japan, believing that one fighting game franchise was only needed in America.
“Sega of Japan felt that Eternal Champions was keeping Virtua Fighter from being more successful in the US and that it would be better if the company focused on only one franchise.. ..and as Sega is a Japanese company, the Japan side won. It was a crushing blow, and was the only time in working nearly a decade at Sega I considered quitting. I mainly stayed with the hope to change that decision, but sadly never could. Even when we did the NetFighter project for Heat.net, we weren't able to use the Eternal characters as a hidden bonus. From Japan's view the game never existed, in spite of its stellar sales and even offers to do comic books and a cartoon around it."
Rather sad and something I didn't know about the series.

The Final Chapter? That could have been great, like a grand finale to the series. Plus, it would also mean that the series has ended and that more attention can be focussed on other things. The fact that it was canceled really is a letdown.

Basically? Sega of Japan were (and most likely still are) a bunch of douches that can't learn to quit screwing around with things. Take Sonic X-Treme for example.
...Well, I would have played it...
