Who says the Sega CD doesn't have any good exclusive games? I love this little shmup. Nice graphics, great music, and a decent difficulty curve. It doesn't take the genre in new directions, but if you're interested in single-release games on obscure(ish) hardware, it's rather decent! Also of note: the US box, front and back, are infinitely better than the Japanese box, which doesn't even feature gameplay screens! www.hardcoregaming101.net/bariarm/bariarm.htm

Very nice stuff, both the article and the game. I really feel like I need to play some more 16-Bit shmups as a break from all the iOS ones.
Though the passage about the title seems pretty off to me. You're mocking the word Bari-Arm for being meaningless and sounding ridiculous? Well, the part about it sounding "ridiculous" is probably up to personal taste (although I already kinda disagree about that), but what about other shooters like Gradius or R-Type? What are those supposed to mean? Or Zanac? Now the latter one even sounds like some kind of pharmaceutical company and yet I have never heard of anybody complaining about any of those names. Bari-Arm is certainly no worse than any of those. Now Android Assault sounds awfully cliched and derivative to me. And the very first thing I thought when I saw the diferent titles at the beginning of the article was "How utterly stupid is the US name, when there was no Bari-Arm game predating this one?!". To me (and I can't possibly be the only one on that) the word "revenge" doesn't imply "action" as much as it implies being a sequel to anything.
So, yeah, that segment felt entirely out of place to me, especially after having read and enjoyed so many other articles from that very same guy. It almost feels like that section was done by someone else entirely.

I wrote the whole thing - it wasn't added by anyone else. Though clearly any attempts at silliness on my part should be avoided - they seldom go down well. It was just a bit of humour, (hence my saying barium Armagnac). For Bari-Arm I think it stems from the fact that in my mind I read Bari as sounding like Barry, which is a boy's name in the UK. I also knew a kid called Barry, or Bazza as it's shortened to, so "Barry's Arm" is what I see. Gradius and R-Type are a little too distanced from anything I would recognise (R-Type apparently is a form of reproduction used by insects). It's the same with Keio Flying Squadron. I can't help but picture fleets of flying Japanese schoolgirls when reading the name, having visited the Keio Girls High School while on exchange with my Japanese class. As my made up defence I'm going to claim that I suffer from a medical condition known as synethesia.

I loved this game, but as I always preffer getting homing shots I was sort of boned on the last boss. Thank god I save stated earlier.

This shooter was always one of my favorites. I'm glad it got coverage and that you're covering all the great but lesser known Mega CD anime-inspired action titles.
