I discovered this pretty cool game for the PC Engine CD by accident: Blood Gear
It's an RPG/Action game, with the action parts being like Cybernators/Assault Suits Valken. The RPG aspects are mainly town/base stuff such as talking to characters, buying items, weapons, shields and increasing your Mecha stats.
You move from place to place through a map screen which allows you to select your next location. The game is somewhat linear in the sense that once you do what you need to do in a map screen, you won't be able to go back to it, but you still have to go back and forth in the same map sometimes.
Like I said, the action parts are reminiscent of Cybernators. Weapons range from beam swords, machine guns, homing missiles, bazookas, among others. You can carry up to 5 weapons. The cool thing is that even if you don't buy weapons, the enemies will drop their own weapons sometimes. But those won't be as good as the ones you buy.
I still haven't beaten the game, but in one segment I was required to find a permanent mecha upgrade to allow me to fly/hover. So the game might even have a bit of a Metroid upgrade thing going on too.
Even though the game has many RPG elements, I think it's actually an action game that just happens to have RPG town segments, item buying and stat building.
By today's standards, the game is nothing special, but if you like old school games, this one is a must play.
