Haha, I should have looked this up when designing the article. A quick Google yielded this. I knew I had watched an episode of Quantum Leap where Sam was a boxer. From the Episode titled: "Right Hand of God", I believe.

Haven't played it, but looking at the images and ending Dan's a pretty obvious riff on the tokusatsu hero Ultraseven, from the shape of his mohawk and sunglasses, to his name (Dan Moroboshi was the name of Ultraseven's humanoid form/alias - he was an alien in disguise). Also, the "Doowah" in his ending is a reference to a sound ("duwa") that he'd make when transforming/flying. Lastly, his ending is a ripoff of the end of the last episode of Ultraseven (here's a blog with a screenshot from that: plaza.rakuten.co.jp/itoyaonline555/diary/200707310000/

Also, is it just me, or does the dude on the left look like Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap? I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed a resemblance.

The pictures for Yuiran and Yuiren are mixed up in the article, which is kinda funny.

The Fallen Angels is awesome, but people always laugh at me for choosing "Karate Man With Flies Buzzing Around His Head".

This looks fine on the whole. Just two things I'd correct if feasible: 1: I'm embarrassed with the sentence: "It’s weird enough to get to the endings, considering what you have to do to get there." I'd replace it with something less redundant like: "Not only are the endings bizarre, but the final challenge you must beat to get them is one of the weirdest dang things in all of gamedom." 2: The names for the characters were right the first time, but the pictures were in the wrong place. It's incredibly confusing, but Yuir an is the purple ninja suit one, while Yuir en is the lavishly-suited crossdresser. Other than that, looks good. Also, Jojo, I had no idea that Dan was a riff on UltraSeven; I always just thought he was weird for the sake of weird. If any editors want to add this factoid to the article, you're welcome to do so.

Still not right. Should be: Yuiran A slender and fit assassin who is the only female fighter amongst the roster. Her slim frame belies her status as the game’s main grappler, with several bone-breaking unblockable techniques that are somewhat awkwardly performed through charge motions. She is one of the harder characters to play properly, but has a lot of cool animations to her attacks. Yuiran also just so happens to be the sister of… Yuiren Yuiran’s honest-to-goodness brother and a decidedly more fanciful dresser than his sister. Pulling a Bridget several years before Bridget ever existed, Yuiren is more strike-oriented than Yuiran, and is one of the faster characters with several graceful but deadly attacks in his arsenal. His move trajectories can be awkward, but certainly not as awkward as fighting in such elaborate garb.

I'm assuming that Masamichi Oyama is supposed to be a reference to Masatatsu Oyama/Choi Yeong-Eui, founder of Kyokushin Karate.
As for another 2D fighter to use the "DOWN!" system, Asuka 120% Burning Fest. FINAL not only uses it, but actually keeps count of the number of knockdowns throughout a round.
