Ironically, and unbeknownst to me at the time, I started playing this the same time DA started writing it. A roguelike for the GB that's been fan-translated, it's actually a super neat introduction to the genre. www.hardcoregaming101.net/cavenoire/cavenoire.htmI personally don't like roguelikes as a genre, truth be told, but the fast pace of this and super-shrunken nature should endear it even to those who aren't fans. Something like Shiren would normally take me hours to get anywhere and then I'd lose it all quicker than a NES-era platformer. But Cave Noire is much quicker to get into, and its bite-sized goal-oriented nature always makes you feel like you could almost make it.

If you want another game like this one, play Konami's Monster Gate for GBA.
There's also two arcade games in that series.

I've actually played this one! I didn't know it had a translation, though. I may have to try that out.

A rogue-like on the Game Boy, I never thought that existed!
And just to be picky, "black cave" would translate in French as "grotte noire", the letter "e" being (most of the time) the mark of the feminine form, and "cave" or "grotte" being feminine. And the very word "cave" means "cellar" or "wine cellar". "Black wine cellar" sounds like one hell of a game!

Fixed up that bit in the intro then!

Only recently found out about this game thanks to Derek Alexander (formerly known as the Happy Video Game Nerd)'s review. Guess I'll have to get my hands on this. A portable puzzle-roguelike that sounds an awful lot like Desktop Dungeons, only with equipment-based character progression instead of XP grinding? Count me the fuck in.
