Someone should probably add a little bit about The Irem Skins Game (aka Major Title, and Major Title 2) to this, since Neo Turf Masters was basically Nazca's follow-up to Irem Skins Game.
It was actually Neo Turf Masters more than Metal Slug that made me realize (even back in its day) that Nazca spawned off of the back of Irem.

How does playing this compare to, say, the old Links/MS Golf games by Access? I've played those a lot of times.
This game certainly seems faster, but the interface strikes me as particularly similar (if slightly simplified due to a lack of mouse controls for positioning).

How does playing this compare to, say, the old Links/MS Golf games by Access? I've played those a lot of times. This game certainly seems faster, but the interface strikes me as particularly similar (if slightly simplified due to a lack of mouse controls for positioning). Aiming is extremely simplified (left and right on the joystick), hooking and slicing is done with button presses before swinging instead of being anywhere on the meter, and due to the speed of ball flight, progression is generally just a lot faster than Links. NTM is also quite a bit less anal about the elevation of the course. There seem to only be four possible elevations: normal, hill, giant hill, and sheer cliff. The giant hills (like in this video) tend to present big problems if you land the ball too close to them, and the smaller hills only ever seem to show up on the green. NTM, being an arcade game, also does not offer mulligans or gimmies (except if your strokes exceed that of Triple Bogey, and even then you're forced to take a +1 stroke penalty in addition to the +4 that you already took for exceeding Triple Bogey...god, this game wants you to lose by all means possible!), and course obstacle behavior is also simplified (er, be really careful around trees, they tend to act like black holes if you even graze a leaf). Oh, and there is a time limit per swing, which Snarboo and I discovered one night on MAMEhub - he went AFK for a while and managed to incur a four-stroke penalty due to slow play, before he'd even tee'd off. =P

Yeah, I saw the video for that. Frustrating that MAMEHub doesn't have a pause feature that works between both players (what kind of arcade game would have a pause button?)
I mean, it's not surprising that an arcade game like that would have a time limit or anything, given you could otherwise just wait there forever trying to take a shot, which has a high potential cost.

Oops, I also just realized that my little joke about the CPU players in the tournament score card is in fact quite inaccurate - I failed to take notice of the far-right column on the score card, which indicates how many holes said player has played through. So even if you've only just completed the first hole, the guy in first place with the score of -5 might actually have seven holes to their credit instead of just the one. Therefore, most of the paragraph after the "club-bending" screenshot needs to be removed. =P

Yeah, Neo Turf Masters is pretty brutal when it comes to difficulty. After all, this is an arcade game!
Still, it's loads of fun, and I think I may try out the NGPC version at some point.
Also it's much better than the Neo Geo's other golf game, the really early release Top Player's Golf, or as I like to call it Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf 2 because it's basically the same thing.

Aww, no mention of the hilarious female announcer? Neo Turf Masters wouldn't be Neo Turf Masters without "On the gween!" :)
Also, down with the German, Thomas Stewart 4 Lyfe. :P

You're right, now that I realize it so far there's been no mention of the Engrishy announcer (PLAYER 1... GO UP... [insert number] PLACES IN THE SCOREBOARD)
Classic stuff.
Also, I demand an article on Street Hoop because that game is completely ballin' (no pun intended). And because it also has an awesome announcer like Neo Turf Masters and thus give me an excuse to post "DOWNTOWN!" and "3 POINT BASKET!". And the soundtrack's awesome too (I'm listening to it as I'm typing this)

Announcers in Neo Geo games are so awesome and hilarious that the subject practically deserves its own article. Somebody should track down BJ Love and do an interview.
And somebody should do a Super Sidekicks article if only to talk about the goal animations in Super Sidekicks 3. They're pretty much the most intense, mind-blowing experience you'll ever have with a video game, haha.

one odd thing I've noticed recently is that graphics from this game have been reused repeatedly in golf games for various Chinese plug & play consoles, especially the Wii-esque ones. (Not the Vii, though. Jungle Soft have some class.)
Like, seriously, there are at least three - maybe even more - from entirely different developers that steal their player sprite from this game. One copies so much that you could practically call it a port.

Another arcade sports game with an awesome/hilarious announcer is Taito's Hat Trick Hero/Football Champ.
"KEECK OFF!"
