On the recent indie side of things, Oniken is a brilliant tribute to NES action games, taking inspiration from Ninja Gaiden, Vice: Project Doom, any number of Natsume games (Shatterhand, Shadow of the Ninja, SCAT), along with a healthy influence from Fist of the North Star and other bits of craziness. It's a ridiculous deal for $5 over at Desura. Also, it features a dude running away from a Polar Bear while riding a bike. www.hardcoregaming101.net/oniken/oniken.htm

God damn it, why isn't this game downloadable on a console?
I hate playing a PC.

Wow, that was quick! The game has been released just ten days ago. It seems the impressions I got from the first demo of late 2011 were right - great love letter to the NES but, along with the qualities, it also takes the flaws of the era.
^ Why don't you suggest the authors a port in case sales are successful enough? They may be not interested in it anyway but who knows.

I played the demo and my impressions were so-so. On one hand, it's a way better homage to NES action games than the last game I've played that claimed to be so. On the other hand, the switched button placement was counter-intuitive and there's no damage indication that helps you see if your attacks have any effect (unlike many actual NES games like, enemies don't flash or make a noise when they get hit and it took me a while to realize that the basic enemy grunt takes two slices to kill). It's a fun game otherwise, but they really should've fixed both of those issues.

(unlike many actual NES games like, enemies don't flash or make a noise when they get hit and it took me a while to realize that the basic enemy grunt takes two slices to kill) This has actually been fixed in the full release. Enemies flash when hit now. EDIT: Checking back with the demo and the preview version that was released last year, it has actually always been this way. Could it be that you are confusing it with another game? Like Kurt wrote on the blog, the best way to circumvent the control issue if it bothers you is chosing joypad controls and map them to the keyboard with joy2key.

I got used to the controls after a while though. I mean, I did played Miracle World and Zillion after all. Glad to know they fixed the damage issue.
Reply to Edit: No, I downloaded the demo from their site. There's no blink when you hit an enemy.

Hmm, then either you got a really weird compatibility issue, or you played the really old beta they released more than a year ago (in which case, do you happen to still have the files?)

I figured out what was the problem. I had the display mode set to "Directx 9". It works perfectly when set to "Software" and the game improves tremendously because of it. It's amazing how such a simple change could affect the quality of a game. The second boss became a piece of cake once knew which were his weak spots.

Fun fact: Entering the Konami code (directions only) on the title screen gives the message "There is no hope"... but apparently it's buggy, and as soon as its activated once, as long as you're on the title screen you just have to press right to bring it up again and again.

Very nice writeup. Tried the demo and quite impressed so far. Feels like a mix of Ninja Gaiden and Shadow of the Ninja. I only wish it had a boss-training mode, but heck I want that out of every game.

For almost a week from now, you can get it on Steam for little more than a dollar.

It's been featured in several bundles and discounted many times, but the current offer at the time of this writing may be the cheapest to date: there's a bundle at Groupees with Oniken in it, and it's a mere 50 cents.

This "Unstoppable Edition" is going to be a temporary exclusive on GOG. I assume and hope the Steam version is going to be an update and not a separate release.
