Who is your favorite bad guy in video games? Mine is Gruntilda from Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. She makes stupid rhymes and quizes you and shit. It's awesome and fighting her is a blast. She has a lot of personality and is very memorable. She's even better as a skeleton in the sequel.
Who are some of your favorite bad guys?

Giygas. If you don't know why, go beat Earthbound. I won't say any more. Manfred von Karma and the rest of the Ace Attorney villains are an excellent bunch, as they all have their own motivations, and it is extremely satisfying to see them all break down screaming at the end of the games. That said, though, behind the spoiler is my personal heirarchy of AA-series villains (don't read it if you haven't played the games; the mere revelation that some of these characters are villains is spoilery enough!): Dahlia Hawthorne > Quercus Alba > Manfred von Karma > Kristoph Gavin > all others And a special mention, IMO, goes to Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku and its on-again, off-again rival/villain, Goro Majima, who has a very "special" obsession with protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, and often drives into things with a truck.

The legendary Gorila Mask: Actually, every boss from God Hand fits here for being so memorable and fun to fight. For magnificent villains, I admire Harbinger from Mass Effect 2 (ruined in 3) Succesfully recognises you as a threat and successfully kills you without any warning. Lucky for you, dead have a cure and the Practical Incarnation or better, all your incarnations including yourself if you walk the bastard path from Planescape: Torment.

CATS from Zero Wing and Egil from Xenoblade Chronicles.
CATS blows up your mothership, captures all of your bases, forces you to fly all across the galaxy to take them back, and is a pretty hard boss fight. CATS also has the crazy alien cyborg look going for him what with having half of his face being green and the other metal. He also gets bonus points because you can't actually kill him in the acrade version. There's also the terrible/funny English translation that inspired the "All Your Base" joke, which (for me) makes him all the more satisfying to blow him up.
For a more serious villain, I liked Egil from Xenoblade. While he isn't the major antagonist in the game, I found him a lot more interesting than the others. There was a lot of drama leading up to his boss fight and it was very challenging too. I also have to hand it to a boss that can do ‡ damage if certain conditions aren't met.

The Shadowlord from Nier.
Kefka's got a soft spot in my heart even if he is completely silly.
Marche from FFTA.

Also he was voiced by Mark fucking Hamill in the first game so that makes it even more awesome.

My absolute favorite villain? Wow. I'll have to ponder that. I'll be back!

I have to say I am a big fan of Liquid Snake in the original MGS - he's a total ham but quite lovable too. I used to really like Wesker until he went all Soul Calibur (oh, and I wonder who'll be the first person to derail the thread with the mention of Sephiroth? )

If you liked Liquid Snake for being hammy What do you think about his German dub? I want to put it in some bread with cheese and have a very delicious toasty

Someone best described Liquid as Darth Vader portrayed by Oscar Wilde. And I think that's why I like the character.

I actually side with Marche. I'd wanted to write a story with a similar plot long before that game ever came around, but never got around to it because I'm lazy and hate writing and keep hoping someday I can learn to draw instead because people who can draw get more attention.
But like Marche, I choose the real world over an artificial and ephemeral Utopia every single time. Especially when I'm the only one not getting anything out of it. How sure are you that you could be miserable and hunted down for the rest of your life just to make 2 or 3 other people happier in their Lotus-Eater Machine? Just because he chose not to be a Martyr doesn't make him a villain.
I don't think I have a favorite villain. I'm not the type who really sympathizes with them, ESPECIALLY since they always get to steal the show anyway. Hard to sympathize with the actor who always gets to play the best/most fun role.

Well, somebody has to be the first to say it. Sephiroth. Yes, I honestly love Sephiroth as a villain. So sue me. (: Also, Albedo from Xenosaga. Also, the villain from Okage: Shadow King (name would be a spoiler, but trust me, when you learn who the villain is and what his/her motivation is, it's absolutely amazing). Also also, the villain from Legend of Heroes: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch (again, name would be a spoiler), if only because his/her battle theme is a DIRGE. Like, not some upbeat boss-y music... no, a really slow, really mournful dirge. Never fought a final boss with such somber music playing before or since, and it's just one of those things that really stuck with me. The character is interesting as well and has great motivations... but the atmosphere of the battle is what really does it for me. And last on the RPG chopping block, who can forget Marjoly from Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure? In terms of less heady, less RPG villainy, I quite like "the prince" from Gurumin, the Mother from La-Mulana... and, uh... I guess Dr. Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog. -Tom

Choosing a single villain is hard. I was really amazed with the first Fallout's main villain though; his design is so incredibly disturbing and compelling.
