www.hardcoregaming101.net/cthulhu/cthulhu.htmAfter unofficially using Lovecraft's creatures in Alone in the Dark, Infogrames actually got the Call of Cthulhu license and made these two point&click adventures. This article was originally printed in The Guide to Classic Graphic Adventures, and now finally made it onto the site.

I'm a huge fan of H.P. Lovecrafts work. For anyone who's interested, I recommend the Barnes & Noble Complete Fiction book. I believe there's something available (a lot cheaper as well) for the Kindle, but I prefer printed books to digital media. I'd like to add that the retail version of Shadow of the Comet hat a bunch of really nice extras in the box, adding to the games story and atmosphere. I apologize for the low quality image. There are letters, documents and even the copy protection is a little trinket from the Arkham Planetarium. Beautiful. Unfortunately the boxed version is quite rare and expensive, but it's a really nice item for any Call of Chtulhu collection. I never really got into Prisoner of Ice. Tried several times to play it, but I always found the art style to be very distracting. Can't quite put my finger on it. The contrast between characters and the background just seemed to weird to me. Right now I'm trying to convert my Shadowrun P&P group to the Chaosium Call of Cthulhu RPG...let's see how that'll turn out

WOW! I bought SotC back in the day, and it didn't have any of this stuff. It was the CD ROM version. I really liked the game, but I remember it getting pretty mediocre reviews back in the day.

I've got the original disc version. I guess they didn't bother to reprint that stuff for the CD rerelease, which is a shame.
The mediocre reviews caused me to skip the game back then, so unfortunately I didn't play it until a couple of years ago.

I loved Shadow of the Comet as a kid. What's funny: I never played it. I only read a walkthrough (no screenshots) of it in a mag, even from that it sounded like a totally atmospheric game...

Oh wow, I need that game now And people say Richard Garriot was excessive for demanding a cloth map with Ultima II (and the sequels).

I found myself in complete agreement with the Shadow of the Comet article. We'll never know why the choice of a keyboard interface in 1993 (if I can guess, it's because the tech is an evolution of the adventure portions of Eternam), and some points are really frustrating, but it's so gripping and atmospheric that can you forgive its flaws. I also loved how the monstrosities are not only visibile late in the game, but most times you see them only partially, quick glimpses of a bigger horror.
Prisoner of Ice, in comparison, is disappointing (with the exception of the backgrounds - I remember a preview saying most of them are digitized acrilic paintings) although it has its moments. However, the impact was severely soured by the Italian dub which is one of the absolute worst ever, not only in videogames. A quick search shows that last year, someone had finally the courage to upload a video playthrough of that version. Even if you don't know the language, you can still feel the awfulness.
A few errors I'd like to point out. - "If hefs lucky" at the beginning of the article. - Lord Boleskine is constantly spelled "Boleskin" in the article. - Even without looking for info on the game right now, I can say it takes place in 1910 and not 1914. Halley's Comet comes near Earth every 76 years. Lord Boleskine, in fact, went mad 76 years before the events of the game. [Would have been interesting if there was a third game taking place in 1986...]

Thanks to the new indexing system, I found out that there is an article on Eternam here already! Where SotC is even mentioned twice as a "spiritual successor" since it uses the same engine as Eternam's adventure portions.

Dio santo che cacata!! The Italian dub is PAINFUL. Is it really official? Reminds me of the equally terrible dub of Half Life 2. Perhaps the same team?

This is really cool, but after Retsupurae did the videos on Shadow of the Comet I'm not sure if its worth it, even if I'm a Lovecraft fan.

The Italian dub of Prisoner of Ice is indeed horrible, but I can safely say I heard way worse - for example the intro of King's Field IV and Nocturne. Anyway Shadow Of The Comet is one of those games I always wanted to try but never had the chance to... well, I guess it's time to check Gog.com!

Several years of hanging out on SomethingAwful has taught me that being a Goon means treading a fine line between simply being sarcastic and being actively bad people/borderline bullies.

Several years of hanging out on SomethingAwful has taught me that being a Goon means treading a fine line between simply being sarcastic and being actively bad people/borderline bullies. That is true, but even when taking out their commentary, there seems to be lot of bad typical adventure game design choices and a dreadful interface. And that whole thing about escaping the lighthouse via wings is ridiculous. And to the games credit they were riffing on a version of a playthrough which had oddly long pauses in between speeched dialogues.
