I'm surprised this game hasn't been covered here yet. I got the Saturn Version a month or so ago. I find the game simple yet deep and the combo system quite satisfying.
What is the definitive version though? Saturn? PS1? The early versions on the X6800 and PC Engine?
Are there any little tidbits anyone can add about the game? (other than it's the same designer as Variable Geo and many of the staff went on to work for treasure)

Are there any little tidbits anyone can add about the game? (other than it's the same designer as Variable Geo and many of the staff went on to work for treasure) I was going to make a topic to ask about this, but I'll just post it here. From what I can tell from the x68k version, none of the Fill-In cafe staff that programmed/designed Asuka120% went to Treasure. However Yuu Yuu Hakusho on MD does play incredibly similar, sharing the simple command motions and clashing system for example. YYH was programmed by Masaki Ukyo, who goes on to program Guardian Heroes, while Asuka120% was by Masatoshi Imaizumi, who went on to make Panzer Bandit. Digging around I found the 2 of them formed this company recentlyish: www.run-web.co.jp/ and programmed Phantom Breaker together. Further digging led me to play Mad Stalker (made in '94 by Fill-In cafe) and found the engine to be a primitive version of Asuka/YYH, minus the clashing. The credits revealed that game design, programming, and graphic design were by Ukyo and Imaizumi! It seems they designed the engine together at Fill-In Cafe and have used versions of it on their following games. What I can't find though is the credits for the earliest released Asuka120% on FM towns, and if Ukyo worked on it then. Can anyone help with that? FMtowns emulation seems pretty hard to find.

I'm surprised this game hasn't been covered here yet. Maybe because it's not something special to write book about (kinda ironic coming from a person who opens threads for games like Tempo, I know ). At least for a female-casting-only fighting it's not bad, expecially considering how mediocre/awful are most of them.

I think it's a pretty deep game for what it is

I played Final on PSX and I felt like all or most of the moves didn't take off enough, so it felt like it didn't really matter which move you used. Also matches lasted too long to the point that it started feeling boring after a while.
I also thought the game could have had a lot more personality. I was expecting a fanservicey, anime-style game like Pocket Fighter or Groove On Fight with all types of fun little details and animations, but instead the game just feels so regular and joyless imo.

I have the PSX version and while the controls feel a little stiff, it's still a lot of fun. I haven't played it that much though. I might give it another spin tonight.

Towns-emulation is usually done with UNZ, if a game is Marty compatible it could possible also run on the multi-system emulator XE. The Asuka CD image is around, one source is the Tokugawa forum.

Despite predating it, FINAL feels like someone screwing around with MUGEN (ie: the low damage, high speed, moves linking together far too easily) more than anything else.

Ironically enough I have trouble finding Asuka 120% characters In mugen. Especially odd, since Shinobu was one of the original TESTP characters for it.

I've found a High Res Asuka, other characters I've found were from the PC Engine or FM Towns version no the Saturn or PS1 games. I killed a Windows install in august downloading premade Mugens just to find characters.

These games are fun, but what the hell is up with the health bars? It's like matches take a whole half hour to complete! I'm all for longer matches, but damn.
Oh, and the character designs are nicfe too. I may make one my waifu.

I like the long fights, makes the game more like chess than a button masher

This thread got me to try out the first game on the X68000. It's actually pretty good, better than most of the X68000's other fighting games. I like the music too. It's probably better on the Saturn and PS1, though, what with the CD quality audio and stuff.
