Huh. Must have missed that. Shame they don't seem to have it for smartphones, at least not Android...

The arcade Block Out looks interesting, I never heard about it. The article misses at least two official ports tho: The PC-98 oneand another for the Apple II GS.The article also calls the ST sound chip "Pokey", but that is actually Atari's chip in it's 8bit home hardware.

The PC-98 port was published by Acclaim Japan? Weird. Seems it takes the most after the MS-DOS version, though. As for the II GS port, it seems that one's more based on the Amiga version.

Not as weird as the PC98 port of Taito's Puzznic, which was done by Broderbund Japan. Complete with anime-ish pics between stages.

Actually, no; it's like the PC Engine version that's got new, unrelated pics. fullmotionvideo.free.fr/screen/G2835.htmlThere's an FM Towns port that has the original adult pics from the arcade, though.

Played and enjoyed this a good deal back in the MS-DOS days. Wouldn't mind giving it another spin.

"with four walls which the pieces drop down instead." > Something's wrong here.
Interesting article. I never played Welltris, and I don't think I want to now.

Welltris very much seems like an acquired taste. To be fair, I have seen at least one instance where someone mentioned liking Welltris better than Block Out, but I personally find Block Out handles the 3D thing much more intuitively.
I recommend trying Block Out II and redefining the controls. By default, the six rotate keys are arranged so that each column handles a specific axis (A/S/D rotate clockwise, Q/W/E rotate counter-clockwise), but I find it's far more intuitive if you attempt to replicate the Virtual Boy setup: W/S rotate along Y axis. A/D rotate along X axis. Q/E rotate along Z axis. Spacebar drops.
I've also heard, strangely enough, that there are some Block Out players who actually prefer the slower, choppier Genesis port by EA over the other versions. Haven't heard a justification for it, so I'm wondering if it's those rose-tinted goggles at work again. (If that's the case, then by all logic, my preferred version ought to be the DOS game...which considering my current preference for Block Out II, which is obviously patterned after the DOS game, isn't too far off!)

One small correction... Block Out actually ran on the Double Dragon II hardware, not The Combatribes.
Also for some reason the BGM for said version appears in a couple of Caveman Ninja bootlegs.
