to answer the question posed in the post. . .
Some schools of Sociology (I'm not dragging out my notes, not at this hour [bout to go to bed. . .just beat KoTOR II after a brief marathon]) claim that there is a path that society treds on when concerning religion. I'll be able to get my notes out tommorrow as it's my first class on MWF, so the banter below should be more accurate.
it boils down to the creation of religion to explain phenomena of the natural world.
-it begins with the belief of being at the mercy of the world and it's elements. . .a metaphysical stage. -then we have the polytheistic stage, with many gods ruling over the various aspects of life. -Monotheism is considered a higher stage of development. . .possibly due to western bias and maybe the unifying power of a single figurehead. -what follows is the industrial and scientific stages. . .which in theory bring us to fact.
it's only a theoretical makeup. I personally believe that in addition to cultural vitality, it has to do with how one society unifys itself or how many wars they win when fighting those that dissagree.
also, considering that GameArts and Capcom have been using the Kill-God device since the mid 90s (with Lunar and Breath of Fire II), it's more than a recent fad. it's more of yet another cliche that Japan has yet to innovate past (not that it's a problem. . .SMT: NOCTURNE was one of the most AWESOME titles I've ever played).

You can't "innovate past" your native culture, though you can darn well try.

What you just described is at least like 75% of the concept of Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. What an awesome game. ... really? Heh... I'll submit to the "great minds think alike" train of thought here. *head swells* ;D Well, Rasa, I actually played a LOT of Shin Megami Tensei (English translated) via the SNES9x emulator, and despite graphical glitches when combining monsters, it was one of the awesomest RPGs I've played... up until the point after the world flooded, and I kept trying to free the octopus, but no matter what I did, the stupid bunghole guarding him wouldn't let him go, and I was absolutely stuck. I thought it was because of some glitch in the translation, and with extreme disgust, I never went back to the game. But the ride up to that point was highly entertaining. Maybe I should revisit it and take the neutral path instead of the Holy road...
