I swear that Sly Spy is the true sequel to Bad Dudes. The engine is similar, although it has more of a Rolling Thunder feel to it. When I get around to replaying it, I'll explain why in more detail. It does have the same director, and I think a lot of the same staff as well. All 3 do roughly use the same processor with varying configurations, according to system16's site. I think even the cola powerup's the same. It IS a very big Rolling Thunder take, worthy of mention as a knockoff on its article. That said, Sly Spy/Secret Agent is different enough from Bad Dudes & Two Crude to have its own separate article.

Bad Dudes was also released on the Zeebo. I take it that it's just the arcade game emulated?

This would be the place to ask this: Has anybody ever cataloged the lineage of the Data East-sidescroller/beat-em-up/Rolling Thunder-esque engine that they have used God knows how many times? I swear I just facepalmed at the beginning of this article when I finally realized Werewolf: The Last Warrior was likely a Bad Dudes spiritual successor (with the charge up attack and all)...

Werewolf rips off Bad Dudes and a few other games. It's all-around terrible.

lol Trust me, I wasn't saying Werewolf was great (WAY too hard to be enjoyable imo, it just becomes frustrating even by NES standards), but it really seems that Robocop, Bad Dudes, Captain American and the Avengers, etc ALL seem to be developed off of some crude, basic all-in-one sidescroller engine that Data East developed way back in the day... probably with Kid Nikki as the originator. Heck, Sly Spy even has a more than passing resemblance to that "engine". Karnov seems like a derivative of it, and definitely uses a lot of the same assets or, has assets that were re-used in later NES titles rather. I was just wondering if anybody has looked into this, as it seems like with their NES titles at least no sidescrollers were made by Data East in tandem, it is very likely they kept the same basic team for all of their non-shump work. Anybody have more info or links they could throw at me to research on my own time?

Werewolf rips off Bad Dudes and a few other games. It's all-around terrible. It's not all bad. The soundtrack is great. The Japanese version's also a lot easier since they fixed the button order.

It was also a Takara game originally, was it not?
Not compelling evidence for "meant to be a spiritual follow-up".

I thought Werewolf was a derivative of derivatives which resulted in an unoriginal piece of crap. At least that's what I thought of it. Several aspects of the game seemed to be lifted directly from other games like said Bad Dudes, Bayou Billy and Altered Beast in terms of gameplay and stage design. I don't know about the US version, but the villain is called Dr. Gordon in the Japanese version and is pretty much the name of the villain from Bayou Billy minus the Dr. But I digress this is not really related to Bad Dudes.

Did Werewolf expose itself to you in a park when you were a child? I take it you don't like that game much... .

Especially when it was clearly trying to ape Ninja Gaiden, more than anything else.

Werewolf isn't that bad. I've definitely played worse. I'm surprised there wasn't some music clips with the article though. Data East always did cool chip tunes. Bad Dudes and Two Crude Dudes had some really cool ones. I would be interested in knowing more about Data East's composer(s).

It'd probably be only like 4-5 tracks, depending on placing port versions like NES's Stage 2 & 5.

Stage 2 of the NES game was definitely one I was thinking of. That track is amazing. Also I don't think I could ever forget the boss music.
