www.hardcoregaming101.net/aurail/aurail.htmI actually hadn't heard of this Sega-published arcade game until earlier this year, when I found out it was developed by Westone. It was directed by Ryuichi Nishizawa, one of the company founders and the same guy behind most of the Wonder Boy games, who I also did a brief interview with. This game really needs a lot more exposure. It's definitely extremely difficult, but it's one of those games that if you learn its quirks, it's very rewarding.

I read the article. I was kind of surprised when I found out that this was not similar to Blood Gear. I'd only heard of it through Blood Gear's ending credits. I kind of wonder what the sequels in the story Illusion of Aurail would have been like. It looks very interesting.
The article is great, but there was only one very small mistake. The Wonder Boy link in the "related articles" section is mislabled as "Asteroids".

Even inch of ground > Every inch much harder then it sounds > much harder than the only way to grasp on where everything is positionally located > maybe just "to grasp where everything...". Also, "positionally located" is a massive pleonasm.

Why does the interview call it "Jaws: The Revenge"? Where did that subtitle come from?

Heh, I've always wondered why companies have official subtitles for their games, but such subtitles never appear in the game or packaging.
Examples: Punch Out Featuring Mr. Dream Donkey Kong Land 3 The Race Against Time

Not much to do with the article per se
But down in "related articles", the right most one says "Asteroids" but actualy shows, and links to, Wonderboy.

When I was younger, there was an Aurail machine nearby that shared its cabinet with a Dynamite Duke board (and had a button to switch between the two games). I was terrible at Aurail then, I'm terrible at Aurail now, but I still love the game, and am happy to see you put it up on here, Kurt.

I was actually talking to him about that over the weekend, he wasn't even sure that Aurail had been released outside of Japan. I hadn't seen any cabinets growing up (though the arcades in my area were, in retrospect, not all that great). But I had seen pictures of American marquees and cabinets, so it must have existed. Good to get an account that it was definitely released into the wild. I asked that Cosmo Tank question specifically because you'd brought it up at the last interview.
Also, I've always pronounced the title of this game "Ah-rail", but according to the katakana it's closer to "Oh-ryle".

In retrospect, they had a really interesting section of games that worked its way in and out of that place (Boot Camp, Wrestlefest, DJ Boy, Tournament Arkanoid, Twin Eagle, Life Force, Rabbit Punch, TMNT, Bubble Bobble...)
