When everybody else had an NES, I had a Master System and frankly I could've lived with JUST the Master System. The Games on it looked better than NES Games and were pretty challenging. (Black Belt was Awesome made awesomer when I found it's a Hokoto No Ken Game In Japan)
Rambo was a Great Ikari Warriors Killer (Japanese version from what I hear is better since it's not Rambo)
Gangster Town is classic.
Too many games to list some I had to emulate.
I don't play it much now because I need that impossible AV Cable and Controllers.

I have a shelf full of SMS games, although I still don't have a number of the ones I want.
Time Soldiers is actually a pretty good port, although I hate (as usual) that the second button wasn't used to allow strafing (or holding down the fire button to strafe). I really want to love most top down shooters, but the constant dance of running towards an enemy to get your aim in, then skittering away from a wall of bullets...it's very unnatural and gets old in a hurry.
Great system. I like Ghouls 'n Ghosts on it as well; the hidden doorways system is unique in the series and gives the game a particular feeling not found in other games of the series.
Also, Cloud Master is excellent (should look better than the NES version too). Have it on x68000 so I don't need another port, though.

Oh I can't forget this The MS version of Shinobi which might actually BE BETTER than the arcade version!
Remember the Snail maze in the first run of MSes?
There is a problem with some MS games though, Some of them run really slow.

I actually have two Master Systems, one with the snail maze and the other with Hang-On and Safari Hunt. I'm a big fan of the system. The port of Double Dragon was much more faithfull than the NES version (two-player co-op!). But the reason why I bought the system is, of course, the amazing version of Ninja Gaiden that was exclusive to the system. This game is so good! It runs completely smooth, has awesome spot-on controls, no flicker unlike the NES ones, and has all of the challenge and cut scenes you'd expect from the series.
Also michiyoyoshiku, you can just use Genesis controllers on the MS if you need them and for the AV cable you can just use one from a Turbo Grafix 16/ Turbo Duo, which are still available from tzd.com new. So now you can go back to playing the ol' MS!

I didn't really like Ninja Gaiden on the MS. but Double Dragon was the best, the Gameplay and music was spot on even if the stages weren't entirely arcade perfect.
Rampage! You gotta play the MS port of Rampage. BETTER than arcade perfect. Music was off putting but still awesome.

The MS had some good games...Astro Warrior ("SURELY REVIVE ZANONI!"), the Fantasy Zones (rather nice ports, though it's sort of silly that the background is blanked out for boss fights), the original Phantasy Star, and Zillion. Double Dragon was a good port as well (except the only time I was able to play it was through the ages-old MASSAGE emulator for Dos back in 1996, which was hella slow on a Pentium 90 - and the sound sucked too). While most would recommend games like Alex Kidd, Aztec Adventure, and Bonanza Bros, I didn't really like those (the Genesis version of the latter was far better than the SMS version).

To be honest, when I had it, I always second guessed my choice of console and wished for an NES like everyone else. Only upon hindsight was I glad I got to experience the MS, because I knew no one who had one.
I had some fun games, like Time Soldiers, Zillion I and II (Which I really had a good time with), and Out Run (One of my all time faves, and the game which got me to buy the system in the first place).
Even some of its crappy games, like Miracle Warriors, I had a good time with...a great system, overall.

I think the Wonder Boy series alone made the SMS worthwhile.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi world, Phantasy Star and the original conversion of Sonic the Hedgehog all made the Mastersystem worth a look. I hate Alex Kidd but man, his Shinobi was pretty awesome for its day!

Had to update my avatar icon for possibly the greatest SMS game of all time. I have never witnessed greater drunken drama than a room full of people screaming as that fucking hawk dropped a brick on an abandoned penguin egg.

Just what the hell was that penguin doing on the moon, anyway?
Also I have tremendous love for Zillion but I'm sure everyone knew that.

I missed alot of these games when I was younger. The Games I did have were awesome almost none of them platformers. I got a better Idea of the master system experence when I finally emulated the system and started looking at the stuff Europe had to offer and the orignal version of Black Belt (I'm a HUGE Hokuto no Ken fan Dispite having never seen the series)

I think that Bonanza Bros for the Master System was definitely superior to the Genesis version (will be getting that article up soon... I promise). I cherish my copy of Phantasy Star dubbing it one of the best games of the 8 bit era and arguably the best RPG of the generation, enjoyed Miracle Warriors, and even appreciated Ys. Lord of the Sword and Miracle Warriors I really wanted to like but just couldn't get all that into.

I only ever played that game on the gameboy, but man, that hawk is too cruel! (I'm a HUGE Hokuto no Ken fan Dispite having never seen the series) Funny you should mention that, last week I finished a marathon watch-a-thon of both Hokuto no Ken 1 + 2...You would think there would be only so much of it a man could take but at the end of Hokuto no Ken 2 I finally beat the damn Genesis game based on it just to show my adoration for Kenshiro.
