Probotector is superior to Contra because robots are cooler then musclare-men, Hard Corps being the best entry. Also I'd like to recommend the Sunset Riders, a true classic to the arcade with a superb port to the SNES (the Mega Drive version had less characters).

Often overlooked is SNES TimeSlip. Not the best, but good fun for $3-$5. Very very hard though.
REALM sucked though

Nash, I would say Probotector is inferior for the 50hz and lack of full screen problem of European games... Ah well, god bless my modded SNES for forcing it to run fullscreen

I like the look of Probotector 2: Return of Alien Forces. The faster speed (at least in emulators) adds challenge, though it messes with the music pretty badly.
The robot version of HC isn't really that great. The regular characters are cooler, really (Fang beats out some wimpy robot EVERY TIME), and the morphing portraits aren't quite as groovy (or well done) as before. Very inspired names too (reminds me of when I was a kid and thought AX-101 was a great name for a robot).

Two of us mentioned Midnight Resistance on page one.
Turrican...well, I have a hard time getting into it. Did mention it in my "list" though; you can't well write about run 'n guns without it.

It's one of the first 2d games (and games ever) to use a mouse/keyboard combination, very cool.

I don't think it counts but what about Assault Suits Valken Sure does, Target Earth (the US version) was a Genesis release (one of the first ones, I think). Valken 2's on the Saturn, just bought it.

Hmm. I think i'll head on over to abandonia and pick it up whenever I've got some time to download something. I don't think it counts but what about Assault Suits Valken I know some don't like ASv, but damn I think it is awesome- when your weapons are levelled up enough you do just start to feel really damn powerful, stomping through the levels, shooting and shielding-its one of the few 'mech based' games I can truly say I love. When I first seen a review of Metal Warriors and they said it was like ASV but moreso I got so excited (especially with the idea of a two player mode and multiple mechs). Dang though, I don't think any game has ever dissapointed me more in my life ever

Two of us mentioned Midnight Resistance on page one. Didn't noticed it.My bad. Fun fact about MR: the Commodore 64 version had the two player mode removed due to technical limitations. While this could be considered a disavantage,in fact improved the whole experience, cause the programmers removed all the cheap deaths and adjusted the difficulty level, resulting in a very enjoyable game. The reason?I think it deserves a place among the best games of this genre, especially for the original approach for the levels (huge and with multiple road, instead of linear lworlds) and the fearsome arsenal...
