Final Fantasy III is a much more developed game than I, which is as basic and repetitive as it gets. You're starting to get a proper storyline, there is much to find in the world you explore (more realized towns, more varied locations, hidden treasures, side-dungeons, etc.), the dungeons have hidden paths, the gameplay has a lot more depth (both the battle system and class system), it's just by far the most realized example of NES FF. It clearly dominates that generation of the series, in the same way that FF6 clearly dominates its generation. Maybe because I played a lot of FF5 that I didn't rate FF3. Think the class system is a bit useless as you don't carry abilities forward. Also old classes are pretty much useless as they get replaced by much stronger counterparts meaning you might as well not have the option of using weaker classes when the better ones arrive. Also didn't help that I played the DS version with the load times that really spoil the pace of the game. Plays much better on NES/Famicom Hmmm...interesting to see 12 lower than 13. And just so low in general. I feel it's gone through a reappraisal* here in the west the last couple years, maybe that hasn't happened (yet) in Japan? Then again, these lists are never exclusively filled in by people who have played all entries, so it's always highly dependent on other factors besides the quailty of the games. *Yeah I know the game was highly recieved when it came out[/quote] I really did not like FF12 on release but played the zodiac age version recently and it's a much better game, thoroughly enjoyed it so much I even took down the super bosses. Haha, I think FFX is #1 in Japanese polls for over 10 years now. The fact that they rank both XIII and Lightning Returns above XIII-2 means that the Japanese should never be trusted, tho. I just shows it's a popularity content rather than people not having taste. The FF13 sequels sold much less than FF13 and most people around the age that voted on that poll were introduced to FF by FFX. FFXII was released when the PS2 was replaced by the PS3 and also most japanese gamers had moved to DS so it didn't get as much play. Also Lightning returns is fantastic.

retr0gamer Yeah, I've long suspected that Final Fantasy III's somewhat low reputation in the West probably stems from the fact that too many people played the crappy (and ugly!) DS remake instead of the original. Not being able to carry abilities over doesn't render the class system useless at all. It's there to add variety to the battle system throughout the game and generally make the gameplay more interesting, and it does that. FF3 lets you develop a massively badass party towards the end, with legendary weapons in each hand that hit 8 or 9 times per hit and all kinds of cool armor... and then pits you against the meanest, most boss-ridden final dungeon on the NES. I generally find 8-bit RPGs too basic to be involving, but the big exceptions on the NES are Dragon Quest / Warrior IV and Final Fantasy III.

I only played a bit of the fan translation beforehand and even then the DS game felt like it dragged and was badly paced in comparison.

It goes beyond bad pacing... Like, for example, when enemies decide what attack to do in the original, they decided at the beginning of the turn, whereas in the remake they decide right before they do it. What this means, in practice, is that you can Phoenix Down someone and the enemy will immediately kill them again before you can act, completely wasting your efforts in a game that's already kinda hard. I remember SO many cheap moves like that in the remake, and lots of other little programming changes that just make the game more irritating... such as how the game TEMPORARILY NERFS YOUR STATS when you change jobs. Holy hell, who thought that was a good idea?! Granted, the original made you grind for "Job Points" instead, which sounds annoying (I've never gotten far enough in the original to find out), but it's asinine to have the game discourage job switching like that, especially when the remake rebalances the jobs to all be more useful the whole game, which should've encouraged trying different jobs... The original seems to be remembered pretty fondly in Japan, at least for the people who played it at the time, and over there it's considered the first Final Fantasy to be a serious competitor to Dragon Quest in terms of quality. On a completely unrelated note, as of about an hour ago, I've beaten all 6 Japanese computer versions of the first Ys. I'm not sure if I should be proud or concerned...

I didn't mind crystal sickness too much in the remake although it definitely can be annoying. I've read that the DS version is also harder, but I've never played the original to compare. Since I replayed VII through XII (minus XI) over the last year, I'm thinking of doing I to VI. Maybe I'll try a bit of both and see the difference.

Calming down a bit, I don't know that the stat reduction was all that big a deal in practice, but the theory had me never wanting to switch jobs if I could. The psychological effect was the larger problem I had. The DS version is somewhat harder, because due to technical issues, they couldn't have as many enemies on screen, so they had a smaller number of enemies with beefed-up stats to compensate. And of course, 4 strong enemies are harder than 8 weak ones. FFIV DS was also harder, though I didn't consider it as much of a problem in that one.
I've been wanting to play through the FF games in order myself someday (mostly I to X), though I to VI is a bit complicated, because I'd like to play the original versions with a decent translation, and the old games have something like 2-5 competing translations. It's kind of a mess.

He is at place 72: Steiner Adelbert. I made the mistake to only write his prename and not his family name (ć¹ćæć¤ćć¼/Romanji Version: SutainÄ) because FF 9 character names don't have a clear structure like FF 15. They used both names (prename and surname) in FF 15, but FF 9 seems to be mixed (Zidane without his family name). I will edit it to Adelbert Steiner.
For whatever reason the ranking has sometimes only names and sometimes combined with surnames (like the FF 15 folks). I also don't understand the reasoning for dividing FF 4 main character into two slots for Paladin and Black Knight version. Maybe, due to different character illustration? I don't know. I can't remember much about FF 4.
I haven't played X-2, but there is a character with the name "?(?(?" (without brackets, but I get here smiley) at place 125? I am a bit sad that best boy Barret is only at place 198.

I only played a bit of the fan translation beforehand and even then the DS game felt like it dragged and was badly paced in comparison. I never could really get into the FF3 remake either when I played it way back when on the DS. That's one major advantage of old RPGs, bloat hadn't set it yet. It really sucks that III never got a remake in the style of FF1+2, or at least a rerelease in its original form. It's the only FF that doesn't have a decent looking version currently available.
