Sony already have a system that's compatible with everything that matters. It's called PS2. Touché, mon ami~ Although for now, I've not been bitten by the PS2 retro-bug yet. I've been somewhere between a PS1, PSP, and Dreamcast gaming binge as of late. On other note, I finally read through my copy of "Ask Iwata." Somewhat of a light, career biography mixed with his thought process and working philosophy on things like: F1 Race, getting Earthbound off the ground, Smash Bros, as well as the DS and Wii. Really fascinating to hear about how much work and thought goes into these projects. And even more touching to read about what a cool friend Iwata was in Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi's own words. What a down-to-earth, kind, yet brilliant genius of a man.

I just started reading it, and it really makes me wish he had written an actual book instead of requiring one to be compiled from various snippets and articles he wrote over the years. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be much fluff. Iwata is the archetypical programmer to manager to executive that was actually good at all of them, and doesn't get anywhere close to enough credit for that.

I'll certainly be picking Ask Iwata up in the next couple of weeks. I feel like Iwata had a unique charisma about him, forming a connection with fans whilst simultaneously remaining humble and shouldering responsibility to meet fan expectations. He had a genuine unwavering passion for the industry that was present and coupled with genuine insight whenever he spoke. Iwata Asks in particular was always a treat, and pulled back the curtain in a way rarely seen. I look forward to reading the book.

I wasn't expecting that. It seems like Shu Takumi was more involved in this compared to most AA games post-Apollo, and I've heard these are apparentely quite well-regarded by fans? Has anyone here actually played these on 3DS? We're seeing some nice localisations of older titles recently. Now all that's left is that second Miles Edgeworth game.
This has reminded me just how many games in this series already exist now. I remember Ace Attorney was a trilogy...

For physical releases it will be Switch only in the US and for Japan both PS4 and Switch, along with a collection including this and the original trilogy. Of course nothing for Europe, but that's expected of Capcom at this point. Hopefully Ace Attorney 7 at least will get a full release here. As is this series slips down my priorities list. It's difficult to justify the import cost and I'm not sure I'll pick this up in a crowded release schedule of titles I can get locally.

On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be much fluff. Iwata is the archetypical programmer to manager to executive that was actually good at all of them, and doesn't get anywhere close to enough credit for that. Same. I would've enjoyed a book from Iwata with a direct sense; but the the content is pretty succinct for being a collection of his thoughts. Would've loved more stories of his comraderie other industry figures, and taking orders from Yamauchi. And being nicknamed Kirby for eating candy at the meeting table. I get the sense that his experience with doing programming makes him very effective as he gets promoted to manager, and then big boss of HAL and eventually Nintendo. Instead of trouble shooting coding, all the human and personnel management takes on the same mentality of solving problems with ideas that work. There's a very warm sense of efficiency through synergy about him. It's a great, quick, heartwarming read! I liked that Iwata was always thinking about the user/gamer experience. It's the reason why Nintendo has stayed strong via innovation, instead of fighting a processing power war the way Sony and Microsoft has relied on with their consoles. It gets summed up quite well when he makes the comparison between Apple and Nintendo. Steve Jobs was something of an egomaniac, and really obsessed about the idea of design and sophisticated simplicity. But when it comes to durability or long-term use, Apple quite simply cannot be bothered to give a shit. Makes me wonder what the career attrition and talent-poaching rate is for Nintendo, compared to other companies like Square Enix, Konami, Namco, etc. A lot of the major directors and producers like Inafune, Igarashi, Akira Nishitani, etc have moved on to their own thing.

Yeah, it's yet another Switch title I'm potentially interested in picking up that won't be getting a physical release in Europe. Seems there are a bunch of those lately.

It's not something we hear much about, but from what is reported it seems Nintendo has high staff retention. I'm sure it's very much a cultural thing, but if you think about it, working within Nintendo, at least in Japan, what reason is there to look to move elsewhere? Nintendo, as far as we know, has competitive pay, good working conditions, low crunch, and the ability to work on their IP. Granted, Aounuma, for e.g. may only ever be able to work on Zelda titles, but he has a great deal of freedom in how to shape projects within it. It's unlikely he'd get such freedom elsewhere. 🧀Son of Suzy Creamcheese🧀 - And game 17 was so nearly within your grasp

Actually, the next game would be number 19. 17 + 18 were Age of Calamity and La Mulana 1+2. Which I got back when I was bitching about how I only got 16, so I haven't gotten anything since. Maybe 19 will be an imported copy of Saga Frontier. For some reason that's only like half the price of a usual Switch game even though it's an import (?).

The full price of SaGa Frontier is $25 so whatever you're seeing is in line with that. Edit: And speaking of it, ugh monster characters are still such a huge hassle to deal with. Nowadays there's a site* for the translation of the Japanese strategy guide that fully outlines how the opaquer systems actually work which is a huge help. The game could really could have used an in-game reference to monster forms or told you if you're going to transform before absorbing an art. The funniest thing is that monster arts now have an icon that corresponds to what body part the art is associated with except this information is completely useless without low level understanding the game never provides! * essenceofsaga.wordpress.com (also being updated for the new names in Remastered)
