Still can't believe this crossover is actually happening...

Never clicked with the R&C games. The combat felt simplistic, near EDF levels of simplistic without that games... charms. And the humour I never found funny. Not sure this will change my mind.

But...EDF is awesome... I'm not into the humor of the R&C games; the subtitles are eye rolling every time; but the looser shooting makes it more simple to engage with I think, and the weapon variety has some creativity to it. I haven't picked up an entry since 3 though and from what I've seen of footage of the latest entry I'm struggling to see any enhancement to the gameplay. It sure is pretty though.

I love EDF as well, ratchet and clank though has the same simplicity but with out the utter chaos and enemy variation that makes EDF work so well.

I thought it was fine for a 3d platformer.

I don't honestly think it qualifies as a platformer since shooting is the predominant aspect to the gameplay. I also don't think it's trying to be as chaotic as EDF, since it's intended to be accessible for kids. At the end of the day though you either like it or you don't and while I think there is a nice level of polish and fun to be had with the series it does seem to play things pretty safe from my experience.

I always thought of it as a 3D platformer with guns, though you do have an equivalent to a platformer melee attack.

I thought it was fine for a 3d platformer. That's my problem with it. It's fine and nothing more. Maybe my problem is more the sony fanboys that claim it's better than mario and I'm just baffled by it or think I'm missing something.

The goofy weapons are what made the series to me. They didn't do anything nuts but the plain carnage you could cause rarely got old.
However comparing it to Mario is just baffling. If anything I thought them closer to Spyro in terms of level design.

The claim I more often see is how ps2 is such a great platfomer system because Sony made a lot (and even claiming their platformer roster better than Nintendo's). It's true that they did, but the jumping feels good in none of them. I find them all to be bad to mediocre games. I may be alone in considering R&C to not be a platformer, but even adding that in, I'd say the jumping is only passable.

Haven't played all R&C games but there's a bit of a difference in focus between 1 and 2, with the added on-foot strafing and many more enemy wave segments, as well as a more linear structure on the hub map. 2 (maybe 1 as well) also had fewer of those spatial awareness platforming challenges where you'd get teased with an item on a high platform and had to find your way there, that were common in Spyro 1-3. In R&C it's not as clear what you can and can't stand on either. Then there are the action adventure elements with various move upgrades, light puzzling and fetch quests kinda like in Spyro 2 and Banjo-Tooie, so they're genre hybrids in my view.
Also haven't played Mario Sunshine much yet, but I have to say both of the above series play better than Mario 64 overall. Not as good as Mario Galaxy though, that's like the first 3D platformer I'd call great. Mario 64 was of course more creative and influential, to give credit where it's due.

Even I like Spyro. Generally I'd say Sony had nice platformers on PS1. I don't know what happened afterwards though, they just got worse.
As for the great 3D platformers, I'd agree that Galaxy is the first by modern standards, and I'd say all the great ones are Mario games. It's kind of a shame really.

Well, Spyro changed developer so that's a big part of it. Spyro 3 felt like Insomniac were kinda tired of the franchise though so the PS2 game might not have been that much better with them.

Whoops, sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm comparing Sony's platformers from PS1 to PS2. On ps1 they had: Spyro 1-3 Crash 1-3 Jumping Flash 1-2 Ape Escape 1 (not played it so not sure if its a platformer or any good) On ps2: Sly 1-3 Jak & Daxter (Can't remember how many there were) Ape Escape 2-3

Ooh right, yeah I can't speak to those as I've only played J&D1 so far and didn't beat it.
