I remember thinking there was a slight shift in tone as the game progressed - from whimsy, colorful and lighthearted to sort of darker and just plain menacing. There’s one music track that I recall that probably had something to do with it. Yeah, all the songs in the game are 50's/60's style rock 'n roll, until you reach the waterfall stage and this plays.

I expect the big game journalist sites to ignore it unless it gets a cult following but would be great if it got some exposure. You would think it's a gaming journalist's job to report on interesting things others haven't found yet. It's too bad a lot of games get practically no media attention. Often smaller games only get attention from sites because there's already a lot of word-of-mouth going on and by that time it's really too late and you're already just reporting on something that's already known. I get that articles on more well known games get more clicks, but surely it's not the smaller amount of clicks is worth the small amount of time it takes to quickly write up an article when something is announced? It always frustrates me when sites fail to take 5 minutes to write an article on an interesting small game and instead use those 5 minutes to write about the millionth Fortnite crossover update. Can I just ask on this note - do people here actually read the big sites? They ultimately will cater to their audience, since that's how they make money, and I've never seen any of them attempt to expand their scope in order to diversify more and reach different demographics. Personally, unless an article is flagged to me, I don't read any gaming journalism sites. Generally, they're neither a great source for news for the information I seek, nor am I the target audience for their opinion. Considering the degree of enthusiast this particular site appeals to I would be surprised if anyone here actually feels catered to (on the larger sites at least), I know I don't.

Not really. Well I do sometimes check r/Games for news since about a year back, and get some info via certain youtube channels like Super Bunnyhop, YongYea and Lorerunner. I also tend to check GDC which is sometimes more topical.
The most mainstream thing I follow might be IGN Unfiltered (long form interviews with developers), but that's often retro focused.

I did a little bit before 2006 or so when I still bought new PC games. Even then I did prefer smaller or genre specific sites. Nowadays, I mainly pay attention to Nintendo Life which technically has some kind of arm's length affiliation with Eurogamer.

Can I just ask on this note - do people here actually read the big sites? I'm not aware of any good ones, so no. Every once in a while I'll take a peek just to see if I missed anything major (pretty much never the case). Usually I stick to something like Nintendoeverything to keep up with Nintendo stuff (since the Switch is the only new system I own), and read a bit of Eurogamer (which has been getting worse), and USGamer (RIP) on the side. Thankfully I just automatically hear a lot of news from Twitter, even though I don't really follow that many gaming accounts. And of course people here post stuff pretty often. But if there's a site that covers all systems and just reports on as many games/news items as possible I'd love to hear it. What's even worse is when they waste time writing about non-gaming topics. Yeah, I really need a gaming site to write about such """geek""" topics as Marvel or Star Wars. Thanks, nobody else talks about these things.

Yeah, like you guys said particular enthusiast sites and YouTubers are generally able to fill my needs, though it tends to be in fits and starts when I want to binge some content. YouTube channels can be better for that since you can more easily dig into their post history. For news and opinions though it tends to be forums such as this one I'm more likely to find what's relevant. I also used to visit Nintendo Life a lot - going back to when they started up as a Virtual Console review site (I think they were called VC Reviews or something). I notice they make a fair amount of factual errors in their articles which I guess comes down to a young staff, but the site at least has a nice atmosphere as long as I don't read the comments. What's even worse is when they waste time writing about non-gaming topics. Yeah, I really need a gaming site to write about such """geek""" topics as Marvel or Star Wars. Thanks, nobody else talks about these things. Hey, these used to be geek hobbies! I was certainly a big Marvel fan when I was younger before it became mainstream. Nowadays though touting them as for geeks is pretty ridiculous since they're two of the largest intellectual properties on the planet. Even worse is when IGN used to cover 'babes' which is why I stopped reading - generally it was a pretty clear statement as to who was welcome on their site and who wasn't. Afraid I don't know of a site that covers something of everything - I'd imagine now it's really difficult due to the sheer volume of games released.

I'm willing to cut NL some slack since it isn't a "professional" site strictly speaking. I think everyone that writes for it is doing it on a volunteer basis, and the site only collect enough ad revenue to keep the lights on. The big selling point for it pre-Switch was that they tried to review literally everything that came out on eShop. That's not as possible today, but they're still a good source for a Switch first perspective when it comes to ports.

Started the Neo: TWEWY today. Man is it cool looking. Game play makes a good first impression too. The original game is probably the best original thing SE has done after the turn of the century. So far it looks like the sequel will do it justice.

Played Yie Ar Kung Fu (Famicom) a bit this afternoon.
This is an endless, score attack game and I managed to make it to the middle of the 4th loop but I don't think it counts towards the game finish challenge as there's no real ending. Your guy just hits the gong after beating the 5th opponent and it starts over.
It's surprisingly addictive. It plays very simply and the hit detection can be a little off, but once I got into a pattern, I kinda lost myself in the game and the music and I just started to vibe with it.

So, in the original concept for FFX, Tidus was a plumber! And his nonsense outfit is an athletic version of that design! As someone that isn't particularly enthralled with FFX, it was unquestionably a bad decision to make Tidus a star athlete instead. Think of the decades of bizarre Mario rom hacks that never were, or the inevitable replacement Tidus's model with Mario or the more color appropriate Wario in the eventual PC port. Apparently there's tools to do texture replacement, so I half expect there to be a red re-color tomorrow. More significantly, a plumber feels like there's a lot more narrative potential there and just more endearing all around. www.siliconera.com/final-fantasy-x-interview-reveals-tidus-was-originally-conceptualized-as-a-plumber/

I read a few of the big sites. Eurogamer would be a constant and I find metro's game central very good and sometimes has some deep cuts.
Gone though are the days when eurogamer would clue me in on some new obscure release. It's what clued me into persona 3 and the import demons souls.
It's just the state of games journalism now. Deep cuts and obscure games don't get the clocks but on top of that the lack of staff means they can't really cover anything more than the odd indie game. They do try but the resources aren't there.
