I think at least some of the outrage is at positioning the LGBTphobic Chris Pratt in the leading role and not so much aimed at the other actors. A lot of people would just like to see Hollywood move on from casting him.
Edit - Mario having dated Taylor Swift is news to me. Is that canon???
After sleeping on it I think Kirby might be the most exciting game for me for next year so far. I haven't been looking forward to an entry this much since Epic Yarn over a decade ago. I do wonder what kind of 3D platformer do people think this is though? Is it stage based? Some kind of collectathon? Something like Bowser's Fury? It seemed like there were some large areas shown in the trailer.

In very slight defense of Chris Pratt, it's more the church he goes to that's the issue than anything he's done personally outside of generically defending it. I don't know how common this is in Europe, but the US has a lot of Evangelical groups that put up a front significantly more modern than they really are. He's not the only celebrity that goes there, and it's a little weird that he seems to be the only one called out for it. The most charitable interpretation is that he fell for the façade since they aren't hammering the homophobic aspects and make it more subtle.
The new Kirby was definitely the highlight for me. It will be interesting to see what form it takes. I figure it'll probably be something along the lines of SMO.
ActRaiser Renaissance is an interesting update. It expands the side scrolling and simulation gameplay quite a bit with larger side scrolling levels and more moves while also adding in hero characters, quests, village fortifications and tower defense style monster attacks to the simulation side. The weird thing is that the graphics are all prerendered sprites that look like they were meant for a scrapped Saturn or PSX port! That aspect wasn't readily evident from the trailer.

The most charitable interpretation is that he fell for the façade since they aren't hammering the homophobic aspects and make it more subtle. Although of course as per my previous post I do think his actions point to homophobia, or at the very least complicity with it I don't really share the outrage against him. In my mind as long as he continues to practice in his beliefs privately and in a manner than is unharmful then he is free to do so, no matter how antiquated I may think they are. Persuading rather than punishing would be a better approach to trying to change his beliefs and it's better to attack the institution rather than the individual in this case I would think. But for those who were annoyed at the casting for other reasons as Spanky says Charles Martinet (specifically his Mario voice) would have been a poor fit for the movie and it was never going to happen. At least he's going to be in there somewhere which should be great news for his fans.

I also share the common sentiment that they should try to get actual voice actors for animated movies instead of relying on stunt casting celebrities, but that's just how the industry works.
I am DOWN for the Actraiser remake but at 30 bucks...I might wait, especially since I am working on a backlog at the moment (FF7 Remake, Civ 6, Fire N Ice, Mr Driller just to name a few).
It strikes me as the kind of thing that'll be marked down significantly around Thanksgiving...

I think it's because execs think that celebrity casting will draw more people in.

^ This is it 100%. It's so cynical and depressing, especially when you see how involved Nintendo claims to be with the production. That they would so quickly sell out their own creation to get it on the big screen is so NOT Nintendo.
I've been trying to imagine these characters with these actors voicing them, and it just doesn't fit. It was like they said "who's hot today?" and just randomly cast people in roles.

Speaking of church, religion and god: Holy batshit, is that new Actraiser game ugly! There are games that manage to pull of the prerendered look - this is not one of them. The footage looks super busy, glossy and bombards you with cheap glow-effects. Maybe it plays alright and one would hope that at least the soundtrack holds up. But if Zool - of all intergalactic Ninja - can get an appropriate looking pixel art remaster, why can't Actraiser?
edit: There is only one Super Mario movie as far as I'm concerned:
Say what you will about its coherence or storytelling qualities, but in terms of pure entertainment value it's hard to beat. The days of fun, campy and weird game-based movies are long gone. I'm sure the new Mario movie will be the definition of superslick blandness. So I don't really care who's doing the voice-work.

I just hope that it will be just a firm enough hand on production to not feel off. Like I don't expect Family Guy-type jokes because Illumination, but still...

Other thoughts on the Direct:
Bayonetta 3 is REAL, OMG! Looking forward to the final Smash character, even though it will probably be a Pokemon or something Triangle Strategy makes me wish we'd get a similar style remake of Final Fantasy Tactics Please let Camelot do something besides Mario sports shovelware. They're clearly burnt out Why don't I care about Monster Hunter? Kirby x The Last of Us looks neat

I'm definitely excited for Actraiser! I can't say I was expecting too much in the "updated graphics" department. The production feels like Bionic Commando Rearmed levels of low-level mid-level budget rehash, that I'm more than happy to pay full-price for. Physical copy for Actraiser Renaissance hasn't been announced yet, has it? How nice would it be if Quintet's other back catalogue games got the Renaissance treatment, like Soul Blazer and Terranigma? Robotrek has some potential for polished game mechanics.

I was laughing so hard at that Mario cast list. Every next character just made me laugh harder and harder. If that had leaked beforehand I would've bet a good amount of money on it being fake. That and the squid researcher's pronounciation of Return of the Mammalians made this one of the most comical directs at least. I can see why people are a bit peeved by them just casting a bunch of big names for the Mario movie. It sucks that voice actors' jobs are often taken up by regular actors, but it doesn't tend to lead to worse results IMO. And in this case the novelty of having people like Charlie Day play Luigi is just too funny. I'm assuming Martinet's cameo is about Wario and Waluigi. Kirby was the highlight (and to answer your question excelsior , I'm imagining it as Mario Galaxy: linear with the occasional open area. Though who knows, Amazing Mirror was a thing), I missed out on Star Allies because it felt kind of same-y as the last 3 Kirbies, and I've been wanting them to go full 3D for a while now. It did look a bit barebones and has no release window yet, so it seems like for this one Nintendo's doing a longer reveal-to-release cycle than I'd expect from Kirby. That also seems pretty evident with Splatoon 3 now. I loved everything I saw from this new trailer, but it's clear that this will be a summer 2022 title at the earliest. But then again, S3, like Zelda is a big enough title to do a long cycle. Apart from that, Voice of Cards caught my attention, but somehow I find the fact that it got revealed only a month before release a little worrying. But maybe it's supposed to be a smaller title. It isn't full-priced or seems to have a physical release after all. MonHun DLC was a bit weak to start off with considering it's not launching anytime soon and they didn't show anything, but Bayo 3 was a good finisher. Not for me personally, but still. N64 and MD being locked behind a paywall sucks, though. I've surprisingly not heard a single person complain about that anywhere yet. I actually would've really liked MD games because I bought the MD/Gen Collection of Switch and those are terrible ports. I am, however, very tempted to pick up the N64 and MD controllers. I've never held a MD controller in my life, and there's a new Sonic collection coming up, so that might be cool. Overall, 2022 looks like it's going to be a bit more interesting for Nintendo. This year had a lot of (relative) filler. What is the point of doing N64 games anyway? Mario Party 1-3 are covered by Mario Party Superstars,we probably won't get any of the Bomberman games, still no Pilotwings 64. So ,the games they showed was pretty much the entire first party 64 library. What's the problem with making those games available again?

I'm surprised that they focused on the 3-button controller, instead of the 6-button one. That could limit which ones get ported to the service.

Well neat over all to get more consoles for the service. I still just can't stand the format they're using though. Let me pick and choose what to download please, you're triggering my neat freak old tendencies.
But it all may be moot for me soon. With my recently modded 3ds I don't even need the SNES and NES apps on the switch as well as the upcoming Genesis one. And for 64 I'm looking into getting a WiiU soon to see how much I can emulate on that.
Cool stuff they're doing. But just don't think I need it now.

Interesting that it’s going to have the cancelled N64 version of Sin & Punishment.

Sin & Punishment had a translated Wii/U VC release so not that surprising.
Not really concerned about the three button vs six button Genesis pad. Not that many games really made good use of it outside fighting games, and I have my doubts that most of those will be added. Plus, the best exclusive is Virtua Fighter for 32X and that doesn't need it or use it well.
