Yeah Snake, as an atheist myself, I've definitely come across atheists who are extremely homophobic or transphobic. Religion can often be used as an excuse to justify bigotry, but it's not necessary for bigotry to exist, sadly. Which is admittedly rather strange to me, considering the most frequent arguments I hear against homosexualality or trans-anything are "it goes against God's will" or whatever. If they don't have a religion and they're still arguing it's not right, then they don't understand the science that they hold in such high regard.

Just because someone's an atheist doesn't mean they know all about science, or care about it beyond what they can gleam here and there to support their prejudices. People aren't super religious where I live, and I've still met a few intensely shitty people. They just found other nonsensical ways to justify it. I met a guy once years ago who claimed all homeless people should be killed. His argument had something to do with white blood cells eliminating unwanted materials in the human body or some other bullshit. Nevermind that society is not anyone's body, and each person within it is their own person with their own inherent right to life. How do you debunk something that has no logical basis in the first place? Hopefully that fucker's back in prison.

Yea I used to know a guy like that. Hardline atheist but also intensely homophobic, transphobic and misogynistic. Also an ancap.

Hbomberguy did a stream of Donkey Kong 64 over the weekend, in support of a UK trans charity called Mermaids, and it got a toooooooon of support. All sorts of people, from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Jim Sterling to Josh Sawyer to Rebecca Heineman, all appeared as guests on the stream, and it was amazing <3 It brought us wonderful things like this stuff:

Well, I didn't know that John Romero was a total sweetheart when it comes to trans rights.

Aside from being kind of an edgy kid when he worked on Doom he always struck me as an alright guy. The few interviews I've seen with him he comes across as kind of shy and friendly.

rome.ro/news/2017/8/28/the-legend-of-grelminar-and-nemesisI link to this because... that "part of an e-mail" he's replying to? That was me. Yes I emailed him and was the guy who asked about plot deets on his pre-Doom games. I'm surprised he even remembered that stuff. (The rest of the e-mail was about Secret of Mana because he had an article on it somewhere on his site). I know this is incredibly dorkish but there's something cool about a guy like Romero even caring to answer nerd questions like this.

T_T It never occurred to me that there would be homophobic atheists. Is their sense of masculinity so fragile, they think it can be masked with aggression against the LGBT community?

It could be simple psychopathia. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that person's story was something as stupid as "man, there was this guy in highschool, he was a total friend, always reading books... I hate friends." [sorry for use of offensive term but I was trying to capture the voice]
Was on a forum once, some girl went on about some anime she found offensive. I merely questioned her arguments (one of which was that Sailor Moon was somehow misogynist, which still makes no sense to me)... from then on she declared war on "weeaboos" and basically anyone who ever crossed her was a weeb, even if they never even mentioned anime or Japanese material.

" [sorry for use of offensive term but I was trying to capture the voice]"
That's not really necessary to do; thankfully the word filter caught that.
"(one of which was that Sailor Moon was somehow misogynist, which still makes no sense to me)"
One could certainly make a case for that, honestly. Practically every episode of the series features the girls messing up in some way until Tuxedo Mask, the token guy, steps in to offer words of encouragement, and then the girls are able to win. It's hardly a flawless example of female empowerment.

Is that a dub thing?
Also, is that still a thing for Crystal, since it's based on the manga?
I haven't read it, but apparently the Senshi are a lot stronger to a point where Sailor Moon has enough power to destroy the universe if she wanted to, so i don't see what a guy throwing roses would do that a girl with the power to destroy planets wouldn't be able to do.

It's not as bad in the manga and thus Crystal IIRC. Naoko Takeuchi has a very feminist approach to Magical Girls, Tuxedo Mask is in there, and he will offer words of encouragement, but his existence more superfluous there. The girls in general are also more mature and Usagi especially a fair bit less whiny. Of course the (original) anime has to fill a lot more episodes than the manga would ever give, which leads to some of the deviations and cookie cutter narrative beats in there that make it seem worse on some of these fronts. Though tbh, when I binge-rewatched the (original) anime a couple years ago, I was suprised how little Tuxedo Mask actually does in there too, I remembered him having to help out a lot more. But there is certainly a visibly different kind of approach between the manga written by a woman, and it being filtered into an anime directed by guys. Though it did help that for a while the very queer Kunihiko Ikuhara was show-runner, who also gave us the best season of the whole thing in Sailor Moon S/the Death Buster Arc and doubling down hard on everyone's favorite childhood lesbian couple.
